The Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations

Canada

Company Description The Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations is a sector-wide initiative that guides humanitarian actors in systematically responding to climate and environmental crises. Developed by humanitarian organizations for the humanitarian community, it addresses the specific operational, ethical, and strategic challenges of climate and environmental action in humanitarian work. More than 400 signatories, including NGOs, networks, Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, UN agencies, think tanks, and academic institutions, have adopted the Charter, alongside thirteen state and EU supporters.

The Charter

Secretariat, established in May 2024, serves as a central hub to support and connect signatories as they implement the Charter’s seven commitments. The Secretariat is overseen by a board composed of three permanent and two rotating members, ensuring diverse governance and sector representation.

Role Description The Owner is a full-time remote role responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall direction for the Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations and its Secretariat. Day-to-day tasks include setting and reviewing organizational priorities, overseeing implementation of the Charter’s commitments, and ensuring alignment with humanitarian principles and climate and environmental best practices. The Owner will collaborate closely with the board, signatories, supporters, and partners, convening stakeholders, guiding collective initiatives, and fostering coordination across the humanitarian sector.

This role includes supervising senior staff, approving work plans and budgets, monitoring performance against agreed objectives, and ensuring transparent reporting to the board and wider community. The Owner will also represent the Charter externally, engage in advocacy and fundraising, and maintain strategic relationships with key humanitarian, governmental, and academic actors.
