Position Summary The Product Developer is responsible for developing client products using CAD software. Products must meet client needs in the most cost-effective and timely manner, while maintaining a high level of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate customer’s needs:
- Research & planning based on available information
- Prepare list of missing requirements
- Collaborate with suppliers to propose and specify cost-effective material and buyout solutions (e.g., lighting, hardware, security systems).
- Participate in design meetings, conference calls and charrettes
- Select materials and finishes that align with design intent, functionality, and budget.
- Manage time and deliverables to meet deadlines and stay within allocated project hours.
- Identify and escalate conflicting or erroneous information in accordance with project protocols
- Prepare production drawing documentation & provide technical support for production
- Translate project requirements into manufacturable solutions using research, consultation, and company best practices.
- Prepare detailed, assembly, and arrangement drawings in accordance with drafting standards.
- Perform comprehensive design and detailing, including welding, tolerances, materials, machining, heat treatment, stress relief, and sizing.
- Develop detailed layouts to confirm dimensions and verify clearances.
- Review internal and vendor drawings to ensure consistency, correct interfaces, and eliminate interferences.
- Produce accurate bills of materials and maintain basic material data.
- Ensure drawing accuracy, consistency, and proper documentation standards.
- Contribute innovative ideas to improve product design and assembly processes.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to standardize file creation and storage practices.
- Stay current with advancements in CAD software.
- Specify and procure required equipment.
- Follow up with production
- Prepare supporting documentation for estimating, purchasing, and installation (e.g., construction details, installation instructions).
- Coordinate with Project Management, Sales, and Production teams to ensure smooth workflow and effective communication.
- Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams on detailing and problem-solving.
- Perform value engineering by proposing cost-effective alternatives that maintain design intent and functionality.
- Other tasks
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and quality assurance/quality control standards.
- Provide technical support to Sales and Design, and guide the shop during the build of new products.
- Maintain an organized physical and virtual sample library.
- Conduct site visits and equipment inspections to investigate issues, failures, and defects.
- Perform administrative duties, including report writing and material purchase approvals.
Qualifications & Skills
- DEC or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- 2+ years in in mechanical design and drafting
- Specialization in creative thinking and technical development
- Experience in manufacturing industry
- Experience with custom fabrication
- Superior understanding of design, engineering, manufacturing and installation methodologies
- Solidworks (advanced knowledge). Wood and/or metal fixture (asset)
- Bilingual (french & english), professional written and oral communication, self-motivated, organized, results oriented, proactivity, experience in rapid paced environment, MS Office, meticulous, precision, Strong attention to detail, Ability to work independently or in a team
- Outgoing, positive attitude, Excellent interpersonal skills
