Richelieu Hardware is looking for a Wood Coatings Color Matcher / Paint Lab Technician to join our Edmonton team.
This is a hands-on technical position focused equally on color matching and paint/coating tinting, while providing technical laboratory support to our outside sales team.

As a Color Matcher / Paint Lab Technician, you will work with a wide range of wood coating products and systems, including stains, primers, pre-catalyzed and post-catalyzed products, urethanes, and water-based coatings.
Approximately 50% of the position will be focused on color matching and custom tinting, with the remaining time dedicated to laboratory testing, sample preparation, formula development, and technical support for our outside sales representatives.
More specifically, the main responsibilities of the position are to:
Color Matching & Tinting
- Perform custom color matches using customer samples and specified target colors.
- Tint and formulate stains, paints, lacquers, urethanes, and other wood coating products.
- Make precise color adjustments to achieve the desired color, tone, and appearance.
- Prepare color samples, drawdowns, and finished panels for sales representatives and customers.
- Maintain accurate color formulas and recipes in the company’s formula database.
- Reproduce existing formulas consistently and accurately.
- Develop new formulas and tinting solutions when required.
Laboratory & Technical Support
- Prepare and test coating samples using appropriate application methods and equipment.
- Evaluate coating performance, appearance, viscosity, gloss, film thickness, and other characteristics.
- Operate laboratory equipment including viscometers, gloss meters, light boxes, and film-thickness gauges.
- Provide technical support to outside sales representatives regarding coatings, finishing systems, application techniques, and color matching.
- Assist outside sales representatives with technical coating challenges and product recommendations.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure tools are kept clean and in proper working condition.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional laboratory environment.
- Follow all quality-control and safe-work procedures.
Requirements
- Experience with color matching, paint tinting, wood coatings, cabinet finishing, or a related industry is an asset.
- Strong understanding or interest in wood finishing and coating systems.
- Excellent ability to distinguish subtle differences in color, tone, and shade.
- Strong attention to detail and patience when making exact color adjustments.
- Experience working with stains, lacquers, paints, urethanes, or water-based coatings is an asset.
- Basic mathematical aptitude and ability to accurately follow formulas and recipes.
- Comfortable working with computers and maintaining accurate technical records.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with outside sales representatives and internal team members.
- Ability to lift and handle products weighing up to 50 lbs.
