About the Position:

We are looking for a Property Services Employee to join our team at Elgin Mills Cemetery.

The successful candidate will be required to:

Interments & Entombments

- Follow clear and specific instructions provided by the management regarding the precise location of interments and entombments. Be attentive to any unique requirements, such as adjusting for ground conditions, respecting family requests, or accommodating special procedures.
- Heavy Equipment: Use any heavy equipment and any additional tools required for interment, entombment and maintenance, ensuring safe operation and careful handling of equipment to minimize risk of damage to the site or equipment.
- Disinterment: Safely carry out disinterment’s as directed, ensuring the preservation of the dignity of the process and compliance with legal or organizational requirements.
- Mausoleum Crypt Front Installation:



Set and remove crypt fronts for inscription according to specific work order instructions. Pay attention to detail to ensure that all materials are securely and correctly positioned.
- Emblem and Photoceramics Attachment: Carefully attach emblems, plaques, and photoceramics to memorials following detailed work orders. Ensure emblems are aligned properly, securely fastened, and display the correct information as requested by clients or the cemetery’s records.

Grounds Maintenance

- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, including lawn mowers, tractors, leaf blowers, and snow blowers, to uphold the cemetery’s appearance. Ensure walkways, flowerbeds, and memorial areas remain clean, accessible, and well-maintained.
- Support landscaping tasks, such as planting, trimming, and caring for trees, shrubs, and other vegetation. Assist with seasonal maintenance, including mulching, weeding, and pruning, to promote a safe and welcoming environment.
- Conduct minor repairs and upkeep on cemetery walls, fences, pathways, and other structures, including patching surfaces, maintaining signage, and ensuring proper drainage to prevent water damage.
- Perform regular inspections and cleaning to remove litter, debris and prohibited articles ensuring the cemetery remains a respectful and dignified space for visitors.
- Assist with the placement and removal of seasonal decorations, such as wreaths, in designated locations while following established guidelines and schedules.
- Accurately locate and repair leaks in water lines across the cemetery grounds. This may require excavation work to access broken pipes, replacement of damaged sections, and reinstallation of pipes to ensure a functional water system. Properly seal and test the repaired lines to confirm their effectiveness.

Memorials

- As directed by management, excavate, pour, and level cement foundations for monument installation. Ensure proper measurements are taken to ensure stability and the correct positioning of monuments. This may include digging precise holes, mixing and applying concrete, and using leveling tools to achieve the desired outcome.
- Attach and set markers on graves with accuracy. Ensure that markers are level with the ground and are securely affixed, preventing them from shifting or becoming unstable over time. Follow all safety guidelines during installation to prevent injury to self or others and avoid any damage to markers or surrounding areas.

Winter Maintenance

- During winter months, proactively clear snow and ice from cemetery paths, roads, parking areas, and other public spaces to ensure secure access for visitors and employees. This includes clearing, salting or sanding areas where necessary to prevent slipping hazards. Stay alert to weather conditions and respond promptly to ensure the cemetery remains accessible at all times.
- As instructed, ensure that all grounds maintenance equipment is prepared for winter use. This may include draining fuel from machines,



adding winter-grade fluids, and performing necessary repairs or maintenance to avoid downtime during snow removal activities.

Equipment Maintenance & Safety

- Perform daily inspection cleaning and maintenance on all tools and equipment used in office. This includes checking for signs of wear or malfunction, lubricating machinery, and ensuring that equipment remains in safe operating condition.
- Report any mechanical issues, breakdowns, or equipment malfunctions to the management for inspection and repair. Document and communicate any ongoing concerns to ensure that repairs are completed in a timely manner to prevent operational delays.

Adherence to Safety Regulations & Standard Operational Procedures

- Use good judgment to make informed decisions in uncommon or emergency situations, always prioritizing safety. Follow safety procedures for hazardous situations, including potential risks from equipment, chemicals, or severe weather conditions.
- Immediately report any identified safety hazards or violations to the Manager. Take proactive steps to resolve or mitigate potential risks and hazards, ensuring the health and safety of all employees and cemetery visitors.
- Follow all safety protocols when using equipment, handling hazardous materials, and operating in potentially dangerous environments. Regularly review safety procedures and participate in any mandatory training or safety briefings provided by management.

Other

- Additional duties as assigned that fall within the scope of the role as assigned by the Assistant Manager or Manager, Property Services as per the Collective Agreement.

Qualifications:

- A valid Ontario “G” driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Successful completion of the Heavy Equipment Training program or equivalency test
- Experience working with grass cutting equipment and heavy machinery.
- Experience engaging with diverse communities and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is an asset.
- Experience working in grounds maintenance or property services, is an asset.
- Ability to engage in physical tasks such as lifting and bending, with accommodations available as needed.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members, clients, the general public, and stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions accurately.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Cemetery By-laws, and the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act (FBCSA) and other applicable legislation and industry standards.
