THIS IS A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT POSITION FOR A BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEE. Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement.
THIS IS A LESS THAN 12 MONTH POSITION. Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement. The layoff period falls outside of this term duration.
Reporting to the Manager, School College Partnerships, the incumbent is responsible for supporting diverse at-risk secondary students in the School Within a College (SWAC) program on multiple campuses. The incumbent will help SWAC students overcome personal barriers and advise them on successfully transitioning to postsecondary education as part of a provincial strategy funded through the School College Work Initiative. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Providing Pathways guidance including:
o Engaging at-risk secondary students with complex needs, providing information to SWAC students and parents about postsecondary pathways, utilizing various processes within the college system to explore postsecondary options for SWAC students, preparing students for successful transition by developing individualized transition plans, promoting postsecondary education through the design and development of initiatives and activities and collaborating with secondary teachers to implement pathways planning
- Providing Access guidance including:
o Developing ongoing relationships with at-risk SWAC students through one-on one advising sessions and/or workshop presentations, supporting SWAC students in removing personal barriers preventing academic success, developing wellness plans, referring and assisting SWAC students to access services and supports within and outside the college,
collaborating with their teachers to support student wellness in a diverse population
- Developing College and Community collaboration including:
o Developing interdepartmental collaborative relationships to decrease barriers for potential students, communicating with Student Success for student support (in accordance with PHIPA guidelines)
o Building collaborative relationships with key community partners to develop protocols for working with SWAC students who have barriers throughout the Georgian College catchment and participating in area youth coalitions related to mental health, addictions, housing, etc.
- Coordinating and maintaining reporting and evaluations including:
o Designing and implementing a student progress evaluation process, documenting interaction with students based on reporting requirements and PHIPA, attending case conferences as required, recording information relevant to the deliverables of the project, providing regular updates to the Central Lakes Regional Planning Team and attending career development as provided
QUALIFICATIONS
- Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to social services work, addictions, youth and child work or psychology
- Three years’ experience in a role engaging and supporting young people with complex needs from various settings
- Suicide Prevention Training certification (i.e. ASIST or SafeTALK) is an asset
- Knowledge of college admissions, application, selection and financial processes
- Knowledge of evidence-based youth engagement strategies
- Working knowledge of Harm Reduction and Recovery Approaches
- Familiarity with working in a school setting, youth addictions or concurrent services
- Computer experience and knowledge with Microsoft Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook), other presentation software, databases and social media
- Experience gathering, analyzing data and preparing reports
- Experience developing and delivering presentations or workshops
- Proven written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
