PURPOSE OF POSITION

Due to a vacancy, the Municipality of Grey Highlands is pleased to invite applications for the positions of Seasonal Transportation Operator. Reporting to the Supervisor of Operations, performs duties as directed to ensure safe operations and maintenance of municipal infrastructure, including all municipal road, within Grey Highlands. It should be noted that availability for emergencies, weekends and holiday shifts is a requirement of this position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Safely maintains public transportation infrastructure, facilities and equipment for effective road maintenance and construction. This includes, but is not limited to:

- Complete early morning inspections of municipal roads. Evaluate winter road and sidewalks conditions to ensure they follow the Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS) and determine the necessary staff/equipment required for the road/sidewalk maintenance.
- Assist staff with snow removal in downtown and parking lot areas.
- Operate heavy equipment such as graders, snow plows, backhoes, etc. for the proper maintenance of municipal roads and proper disposal of waste (gravel and pavement,



sidewalks, ditches, culverts, bridges, guardrails, guideposts, signs, etc.).
- Provide safe conditions for the public (removal of ice, rubbish, tree limbs, etc.).
- Respond to emergency calls (storms and accidents) to restore roads to pre-emergency conditions, when completing roads tasks.
- Maintain equipment to ensure it is in good operational condition for safe use.
- Communicate with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Work safely within the law and safe work practices/procedures (understanding and following standard operating procedures, wearing personal protective equipment, using MSDS information, ensuring all guards are in place).
- Report and record asset maintenance needs or repairs to team leader or manager in support of asset management.
- Assisting other departments as needed.
- Performing other duties as assigned in accordance with corporate objectives.

Develops and maintains good working relationships with Council, staff and the public which includes:
- Complying with all office and maintenance shop procedures
- Attending meetings, as required
- Participating in resolution of delivery service issues
- Communicating ideas, suggestions, and procedural changes which may assist the organization
- Assisting where and when needed during staff shortages and/or emergency situations
- Responding to public enquiries in a timely manner

Responsible, as an employee, for health & safety under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA). This includes, but is not limited to:
- Working safely within the law and safe work practices/procedures (understanding and following standard operating procedures, wearing personal protective equipment, using MSDS information, ensuring all guards are in place, when applicable)
- Immediately reporting unsafe acts, conditions, or contraventions of the OHSA to a supervisor, the JHSC, or a Health & Safety representative
- Maintaining a clean, orderly work area

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Education and Experience:

- Completion of OSSD (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- A minimum of two (2) years experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery, preferably within a municipal setting.
- Valid DZ Driver’s License required.

Work Requires:

- Working knowledge of all applicable legislation, by-laws,



and policies related to transportation services in a municipal setting.
- Working knowledge of the skilled operation of similar heavy equipment and machinery (grader, backhoe, snow-plow) and ability to make minor adjustments and repairs on equipment used.
- Ability to operate standard transmissions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment and initiative when dealing with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to provide timely and courteous customer service.
- Good judgment and initiative and the ability to follow directions.
- Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Basic computer literacy and Microsoft Office skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS Work involves a substantial amount of heavy lifting (40-50 lbs), carrying, crawling, and climbing. Subject to the requirements of the OHSA, there may be times when the road maintenance operations continue in all weather, including severe conditions such as freezing rain, blizzards, and white outs with poor visibility and/or slippery conditions. A high degree of mental alertness is required to ensure the safety of oneself and others as working with heavy equipment, vehicles, unpredictable traffic conditions, road rage, tools and hazardous chemicals is required.

There is a high risk of exposure to various risks such as dust, chemicals, smells, broken glass, and sharp objects, as well as the potential for slips when moving items. Your hours of work will follow a seven-day rotating schedule, with core hours from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including a half-hour unpaid lunch break. Early call-ins may be required depending on weather conditions.

If called in early, the shift schedule will be 4:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Employees are typically scheduled for 10-hour shifts, four days per week. You may be required to work additional hours as necessary to fulfill your duties.
