Job Responsibilities

This position reports to the Recreation Assistant at our Town of Oakville - Youth Centre facilities and is responsible for assisting the Recreation Assistant in supervising programs and participants of the Town of Oakville - Youth Centres.

The Duties Of This Position Include

- Assist in developing and implementing programming and activities for the Town of Oakville Youth Centres, in collaboration with youth participants and other Recreation and Culture staff.
- Assist in the delivery of registered programs or activities for the Town of Oakville.
- Assist in the supervision of the Centre during operating hours.
- Assist the Recreation Assistant with needs assessment of youth issues at the Youth Centre.
- Ensure the continuing safety of all participants while at the program with the assistance of the Recreation Assistant. Advise and document all accidents/incidents immediately. All reports must be received by the department within 24 hours.
- Report and document all health and safety related incidents as per job training guidelines and report to Full Time staff immediately.
- React to emergency situations and behaviour management issues in accordance to department approved procedures.
- Foster a positive, welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and staff.
- Act as a role model and mentor for youth participants. Encourage and promote positive social behaviour, healthy relationships with peers, community engagement and self-efficacy.

- Maintain accurate attendance of drop-in and registered participants.




- Support the objectives and philosophies of youth programming as established by the Recreation and Culture department.
- Actively participate in all department required trainings.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Currently enrolled in or completed a university or college program in Recreation Leadership, Youth Services, or a related field.
- 3 years’ work or volunteer experience interacting effectively and positively with young people, demonstrating strong leadership abilities.

May also consider those with an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Current Intermediate First Aid with CPR C (formerly Standard First Aid with CPR C) from a WSIB-approved provider, issued within the last three (3) years and valid throughout the term of employment
- CPI Non-violent Intervention Training or equivalent is considered an asset.
- Counselling skills, behaviour management training and effective communications skills with a youth focus is an asset.
- HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) Certification is an asset.
- Robust problem solving and effective program planning skills.
- Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends.

Please note that this position requires a satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector screening check dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment. Candidates who are under the age of 18 at the time of hire will only be required to provide a criminal record check.
