Department: Shelter & Housing Services

Hours of Work: 24 Hours Per Week (Part-Time, 1-Year Fixed-Term Contract)

Reports to: Manager of Shelter and Housing Services

Number of Positions: 1 (Downtown Toronto, with some travel to other sites as needed)

Pay Rate: $25.90 Hourly (Plus $1/hour Overnight Premium as per Collective Agreement)

Position Overview

Reporting to the Manager of Shelter and Housing Services, the Shelter Overnight Support Counsellor provides critical support to the clients and staff in the Shelter to ensure that clients are secure and supported as they move towards sustainable shelter. The incumbent will have the demonstrated ability to respond in the moment in a calm and effective manner while also understanding the mid- and long-term impact and outcomes for clients and services. The position navigates social and institutional systems from a client centered and community capacity building framework.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Support





· Provide client centered support to women in the Shelter while also connecting with external allies and resources

· Provide assistance on an ongoing basis through a continuum of services that can include initial and ongoing assessment, goals setting and support, systems navigation and case management.

· Support and regularly review client goal plans on an ongoing and regular basis

· Complete administrative tasks; data base entry, updates and service-related reports

· Provide crisis intervention support as needed.

· Effectively navigate through community support services and appropriate referrals

Program Support

· Works within a multi-disciplinary team, liaising with others to promote a supportive and respectful environment

· Ensures flow of critical information, including documentation and shift change, to bring forward issues and occurrences that take place while on shift

· Promotes a mutually supportive environment that emphasizes collaborative approaches and values the contributions of all members, including staff and clients

· Other duties as required

Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Experience

· Post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Services, Social Work, Addictions, or Mental Health

· Has a minimum of 2 years of professional experience working in social services or related fields, and/or a combination of relevant education and experience





· Experience working in a women-centered organization would be an asset

· Certificates in First Aid, CPR, crisis intervention and prevention and harm reduction would be an asset

Working Environment

· Evenings, nights and mornings

· This position may be single shifted

· This position involves walking, commuting and participating in client recreational activities.

· The environment is energetic and unpredictable and involves regular exposure to clients who have been homeless and are living with challenges associated with mental health and addictions

Where we work

This role is based in Downtown Toronto and requires working on-site during the hours of work. Some travel to other sites may be needed.
