Description The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for a sessional lecturer to teach the course SOCW 4760: Family and Child Welfare Policy (3.0.0). This course is delivered in-person at the Kamloops campus on Wednesdays from 17:30 to 20:20 between September 8th and December 23rd.

SOCW 4760 Calendar Description

Students critically examine family and child welfare policy and practice issues. The conceptual framework of this course includes an overview of ideological influences and stresses the importance of a gender, race, and class analysis of family and child welfare issues and practice in Canada.

Educational Objectives/Learning Outcomes

- Distinguish between child, family and community perspectives in relation to the policy, organization and provision of child welfare services.
- Summarize key developments in the professionalization, organization, regulation, and reform of child welfare policy and practice in British Columbia.
- Describe the major structures of decision-making and processes of policy development with respect to British Columbia's child welfare services.
- Identify several ways in which child welfare policy and services impact racialized groups especially Indigenous peoples.
- List key features and discuss some of the challenges of contemporary models of child welfare services for Indigenous peoples.
- Identify several areas of social policy that impact the welfare of children and families.




- Distinguish Canadian systems of child welfare from those of other developed nations.
- Identify several ways in which gender relations impact policy and practice in child welfare.
- Discuss some of the implications of contemporary child welfare research for child welfare policy and practice.
- Distinguish between legislation, policy, standards and procedures in child welfare services.
- Describe several possible relationships between policy and practice in child welfare

Requirements

- A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline with an undergraduate credential in social work is preferred. A master’s degree in social work is required.
- Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions preferred.
- A minimum of five years of related practice experience in child and family welfare with a proven record of anti-racist and anti-colonial social work practice is required; specialization in Indigenous family and child welfare is preferred.
- An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
- Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) are required.
- Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
- Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings, supporting and embracing differences with kindness, love, and respect (NIMMIWG, 15.7).
