Senior Structural Steel Detailer and Drafter

Location: Sarnia, Ontario

Position: Full time, permanent, on site

Salary: $68,000 to $85,000 per year, based on experience

ProMart Industrial is a third generation, family built structural steel fabricator and industrial contractor that has been operating in Sarnia since 1985.

Our facilities include an 80,000 square foot fabrication shop, a 25,000 square foot climate controlled coating shop, and an 11 acre laydown yard. We provide steel detailing, fabrication, industrial coatings, modular assembly, field installation, millwrighting, and construction services to clients across North America.

With work lined up into 2028, our team is supporting major projects across the nuclear, petrochemical, data centre, mining, automotive, food and beverage, defence, and infrastructure sectors.

We are continuing to invest in our people, equipment, and technology, and we are looking for an experienced Senior Structural Steel Detailer and Drafter to join our growing in house team.

The Role The Senior Structural Steel Detailer and Drafter will be responsible for producing accurate, practical, and constructible structural steel models, shop drawings, and erection drawings using SDS2.

This is not a role where drawings are produced in isolation. You will work directly with project managers, engineers, quality personnel, production teams, coatings personnel, and field crews to make sure the work can be fabricated, shipped, and installed properly.

The right person understands that strong detailing has a direct impact on every part of a project. They ask the right questions early, identify potential issues before steel reaches the shop, and take ownership of the accuracy and completeness of their work.

Responsibilities

- Create and maintain detailed 3D structural steel models using SDS2
- Produce accurate shop drawings, assembly drawings, part drawings, and erection drawings
- Detail structural steel, miscellaneous metals, platforms, stairs, ladders, handrails, supports, and modular assemblies




- Review architectural, structural, mechanical, and engineering drawings, specifications, sketches, and contract documents
- Detail connections in accordance with engineering requirements, project specifications, and applicable standards
- Review models and drawings for dimensional accuracy, clashes, constructibility, fabrication requirements, shipping limitations, and field installation considerations
- Prepare material lists, bolt lists, reports, model exports, and other fabrication information
- Generate accurate CNC data for ProMart’s PythonX beamline, FICEP machinery, plasma plate beds, and Voortman V320
- Coordinate drawing and model releases with project schedules, fabrication priorities, shipping sequences, and erection requirements
- Manage drawing submissions, approval comments, RFIs, revisions, field measurements, and change documentation
- Maintain explicit revision control and ensure production and field teams are working from current information
- Review the work of junior detailers and provide practical guidance and mentorship
- Work closely with fabrication personnel to resolve questions and improve drawing clarity
- Participate in project coordination, model review, and production planning meetings
- Help improve ProMart’s detailing standards, SDS2 templates, libraries, workflows, and quality checks
- Support the introduction of current digital tools that improve drawing review, production planning, and project execution

Qualifications

- Strong structural steel detailing experience, with five or more years preferred
- Advanced experience using SDS2 in a professional structural steel detailing environment




- Experience producing complete shop and erection drawing packages for structural and miscellaneous steel
- Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication, welding, bolting, coatings, shipping, and erection practices
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and engineering drawings
- Working knowledge of applicable CSA, CWB, CISC, and AISC standards and detailing practices
- Experience managing RFIs, approval comments, revisions, and drawing changes
- Experience with model to machine CNC workflows and automated steel processing equipment
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify dimensional, coordination, and constructibility issues before fabrication
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines
- Experience mentoring or checking the work of junior detailers is an asset
- A diploma or degree in drafting, engineering technology, construction technology, or a related discipline is an asset
