Streamline Accounting Professional Corporation is a boutique CPA firm based in Calgary. We provide accounting, tax, bookkeeping, and advisory services to a diverse group of owner-managed businesses and individuals.
Our goal is not simply to complete compliance work. We help clients understand their financial information, meet their reporting and tax obligations, and make better business decisions.
For an accounting student or recent graduate, this role offers the opportunity to see how accounting principles learned in school are applied to real client situations. Team members receive structured training through group sessions, one-on-one coaching, practical examples, and ongoing feedback.
As employees develop their technical skills and judgment, they are given progressively greater responsibility in client files, tax work, financial statement preparation, and client communication.
Position Overview
We are looking for an Accounting Student / Junior Staff Accountant who is interested in developing a career in public accounting.
This role provides broad exposure to bookkeeping, financial reporting, personal and corporate taxation, GST, and year-end accounting work. No prior public accounting experience is required; however, candidates should have a strong foundation in accounting principles and demonstrate a genuine willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping and Month-End Accounting
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual bookkeeping using QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and Microsoft Excel.
Complete bank and credit card reconciliations.
Reconcile accounts receivable, accounts payable, GST, payroll-related accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
Identify and investigate unusual transactions or account balances.
Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures.
Year-End Financial Statements
Assist with preparation of financial statements under CSRS 4200 compilation engagement standards.
Prepare year-end adjusting entries, including:
depreciation and amortization;
accrued expenses and other accruals;
accounts receivable and accounts payable adjustments;
prepaid expenses;
deferred or unearned revenue;
GST reconciliations and reasonability testing;
payroll and T4 reconciliations;
corporate income tax accruals; and
other year-end adjustments as required.
Prepare supporting working papers and account reconciliations for year-end files.
Investigate discrepancies and document conclusions clearly.
Personal Tax
Assist with preparation of personal income tax returns involving areas such as:
employment and investment income;
rental properties;
sole proprietorship and self-employment income;
capital gains and losses on real estate and investments;
foreign property reporting;
medical, donation, and other personal tax credits; and
other personal tax matters based on client circumstances.
Corporate Tax and GST
Assist with preparation of corporate income tax returns.
Prepare GST/HST returns using the regular and Quick Method where applicable.
Reconcile GST accounts and identify potential reporting issues.
Assist with other tax compliance and information returns as experience develops.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has a strong accounting foundation and is genuinely interested in developing within public practice.
Preferred qualifications include:
Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, an accounting program at a post-secondary institution.
Strong understanding of fundamental accounting concepts, including debits and credits.
Good academic performance in accounting-related courses.
No previous public accounting experience is required.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Familiarity with QuickBooks or other accounting software is an asset.
Solid written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to follow established procedures while also asking thoughtful questions when something does not make sense.
Ability to receive feedback, apply it, and demonstrate improvement.
Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
Willingness to work collaboratively and support other team members.
Interest in building a longer-term career in accounting and taxation.
