Life Underwriter, Consultant (French and English Required)

Our client is seeking an experienced and relationship-focused consultant to join a specialized life underwriting team. This is a permanent, full-time position.

Location: Remote in Canada.

Compensation Range: $100-110 k + CAD annually, based on experience. plus bonus targetting 15% of base

What You’ll Do

You will provide expert underwriting guidance on complex insurance cases while serving as a trusted advisor to financial professionals and carrier partners. You will manage sophisticated cases from preliminary assessment through final underwriting decisions, helping deliver exceptional service and optimal client outcomes.

Responsibilities

- Provide expert underwriting consultation to advisors regarding eligibility, underwriting requirements, and case strategies.
- Manage complex underwriting files from preliminary assessment through final underwriting approval.
- Review medical, financial, and supporting documentation to develop comprehensive underwriting recommendations.
- Package cases strategically to optimize underwriting decisions and achieve the best possible outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with insurance carrier underwriters to negotiate and manage complex cases.
- Communicate underwriting decisions, including challenging or declined cases, while providing strategic recommendations and alternative solutions.
- Review policy amendments, exclusions, and final underwriting decisions for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain accurate case documentation and status updates within internal systems.
- Provide underwriting guidance on non-qualifying and complex cases requiring specialized expertise.
- Partner with senior leadership on exceptional or highly complex underwriting situations.




- Contribute to underwriting education initiatives, advisor presentations, and knowledge-sharing programs.
- Support ongoing projects and continuous improvement initiatives within the Advanced Underwriting team.

Qualifications

- Fluency in both English and French, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- 5-10+ years of progressive underwriting experience within the life insurance industry.
- Undergraduate degree in Business or a related field is preferred.
- Professional underwriting designations such as AALU or FALU are considered robust assets.
- Experience supporting financial advisors and high-net-worth insurance clients.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple complex files simultaneously.
- Excellent relationship-building and consultative communication skills.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
