Position Overview
The Account Manager is an outside sales position responsible for selling HMM’s transportation services to customers within the designated geography. The primary responsibility is to develop customer business relationships both with the existing account base and develop new accounts in order to secure business for the import/export trade lanes as assigned. Functions also include negotiating contracts/rates,
problem solving and handling daily account requests. An Account Executive is responsible for reporting market and account activity to the sales manager as well as meeting weekly sales targets and other Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) set by Regional Management. The Account Executive is expected to maintain a professional image at all times that best represents HMM.
Core Responsibilities
- Conduct outside sales calls.
- Maintain customer contact via face‑to‑face and non‑facing means.
- Communicate verbally and in writing with internal colleagues and external customers.
- Manage rate/service contracts in collaboration with pricing & trade groups.
- Ensure service contracts are managed and updated properly with inside sales representatives.
- Review weekly KPIs and performance metrics to maximize lifting and revenue for accounts.
- Attend weekly meetings and prepare weekly pre‑plans and post‑plans.
- Promptly submit all business‑related expenses.
- Prepare market reports on a weekly or as required basis.
- Pursue past‑due accounts and coordinate with finance/accounting groups.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Competencies

- Sales background preferred; understanding of the sales cycle essential.

- Strong problem‑solving skills and detail orientation.
- Understanding of basic negotiations dynamics.
- Basic knowledge of business, sales, and marketing essential.
- Knowledge of international business and global trade useful.
- Knowledge of ocean shipping on either import or export highly helpful.
- Proficiency in MS Office; knowledge of CRM and TMS software considered a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and a vehicle meeting company standards.
- Willingness to travel outside the territory, if required.
Education & Experience
High School diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in business, sales, marketing, global logistics, or maritime preferred.
At least 2 years of customer‑facing outside sales experience required.
Prefer 3–5 years of sales experience with ocean carriers, global logistics, or international trade.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Work performed in an office environment with moderate noise levels; frequent standing, sitting, walking, and computer use.
- Occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 20 pounds.
- Position may require 0–20% travel within the territory.
- Management may reassign duties as necessary.
Benefits
The pay range listed for this position represents the anticipated starting salary or wage; the final offered rate will be based on individual merit and comparable employee compensation.
