The Underwriting & Portfolio Analyst is an individual-contributor role supporting portfolio performance monitoring, experience analysis, underwriting analytics, portfolio governance, technical forecasting, and partner profitability management for Redion travel insurance portfolio.
The role provides quantitative analysis and business insights that support underwriting decisions, pricing actions, profitability management, and sustainable portfolio performance. The successful candidate will support underwriting governance through regular monitoring of portfolio performance, emerging risks, and pricing adequacy.
NOTE: This is a non-actuarial position. Actuarial designation progress is not required, and the role is not eligible for actuarial study leave, examination reimbursement, or actuarial education support.

The position is based in Toronto, and the working environment is a mix of in-office and remote work, though always in close collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders.
Responsibilities Include:
Experience Monitoring & Portfolio Performance
- Monitor portfolio performance through profitability, loss ratio, frequency, severity, claims trend, exposure, and renewal analyses.
- Produce regular portfolio reviews covering products, partners, distribution channels, markets, and customer segments.
- Identify emerging trends, deterioration indicators, and material deviations from expected performance.
- Investigate drivers of profitability changes and support recommendations for corrective actions where appropriate.
- Support the development and maintenance of portfolio scorecards, monitoring frameworks, and key performance indicators.
Underwriting Governance & Red List Management
- Support the maintenance and administration of the Red List process and associated governance requirements.
- Identify products, partners, customer segments, and portfolios requiring enhanced monitoring or remediation.
- Support the development of recommendations including pricing changes, underwriting actions, product modifications, benefit adjustments, or enhanced governance oversight.
- Support the preparation of materials and recommendations for Local and Global Underwriting Committees.
- Support monitoring of remediation actions and help assess their effectiveness.
Technical Forecasting & Business Planning
- Support the preparation and maintenance of technical forecasts supporting budgeting, planning, and business performance reviews.
- Assist in developing forecast assumptions based on portfolio performance, underwriting actions, pricing changes, and emerging experience trends.
- Monitor actual performance against forecast and explain material variances.
- Support analysis of the expected impact of pricing actions, underwriting decisions, product changes, and portfolio initiatives.
- Provide portfolio insights that support strategic decision-making and profitability management.
Pricing Support & Partner Profitability
- Support pricing initiatives through experience studies, profitability analyses, and performance reviews.
- Support analysis of domestic and international tenders, renewals, and new business opportunities.
- Assist with profitability reviews for existing and prospective partners.
- Support Commercial and Product teams during partner negotiations and performance discussions.
- Support monitoring of pricing effectiveness and identify opportunities for portfolio improvement.
- Collaborate with actuarial team members to validate assumptions used in pricing, forecasting, and profitability analyses.
Analytics & Automation
- Develop and maintain reporting tools, dashboards, and analytical solutions using SQL, Python, Power BI, Excel, or similar technologies.
- Support automation of recurring portfolio monitoring and profitability reporting processes.
- Collaborate with Product, Claims, Finance, Commercial and Operations teams to improve portfolio insights and data quality.
- Maintain clear and auditable documentation supporting portfolio analyses, governance decisions, and underwriting recommendations.
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business Analytics, or related quantitative discipline.
- 2+ years of experience in underwriting, portfolio management, pricing, actuarial analysis, or insurance analytics.
- Good understanding of insurance profitability metrics, underwriting performance indicators, and portfolio management principles.
- Experience supporting or interpreting experience studies and profitability analyses.
- Experience supporting forecasting, portfolio reviews, or underwriting governance activities is an asset.
- Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong Excel skills required.
- Experience with SQL, Python, Power BI, or similar analytical tools is highly desirable.
- Ability to communicate technical findings to underwriting, commercial, operational, and management audiences.
- Experience in Travel Insurance, Accident & Sickness, or specialty insurance products is preferred.
