Among its core areas of expertise are the development of materials hosting novel quantum electronic states, and measurement of nanoscale electronic structures built from these materials, whose device characteristics display remarkable new paradigms of operation.The Cleanroom Technician provides specialist technical support for research activities within the Blusson QMI Cleanroom and associated laboratories that form part of the Institute’s Nanofabrication Facilities. To the extent possible, the technician also advises faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate students and other facility users on the proper use of the cleanroom and the associated tools and processes, and oversees their activities within the cleanroom, contributing to a positive user experience and a safe work environment.The individual is expected to work independently with minimal direct supervision for the day to day operation of the cleanroom facility. The role holder will monitor, maintain, repair, modify and strive to improve the facility infrastructure and assist with the installation of new tools as required.The technician has a duty to ensure that all tasks conducted within the cleanroom are performed in a safe manner that conforms to current legislation and work place protocols.Organizational StatusThe Cleanroom Technician reports to Blusson QMI’s Facilities Director. The incumbent is expected to be able to work pro‑actively and independently, under minimal direction, for the routine tasks of the role.Work PerformedPlans and delivers nanofabrication process work for the realization of micro‑ and nano‑structured devices, using techniques that include, but are not limited to, two‑photon lithography,



electrical wirebonding, electron‑beam lithography, photolithography, wet and dry etching, physical and chemical vapour deposition, metrology, and device testing.Works on a number of different projects, that includes internal and external stakeholders and industrial partners.Carries out processing of existing and current nano/micro‑fabrication and packaging techniques.Performs routine/periodic monitoring and/or testing of lab equipment, e.G. measurement of mask‑aligner lamp intensity, particle count measurements, calibration of stylus profiler etc.Interacts with industry partners, including discussing new projects, reporting on results, and coordinating work.Monitors the performance of processes to ensure that these processes remain operational and perform to specifications.Troubleshoots lab equipment, performs simple repairs when/where possible, and/or informs supervisors upon need for maintenance.Performs routine/periodic equipment maintenance tasks, e.G. de‑ionised water filter replacement, vacuum pump oil changes, cleaning of resist spinners, chamber cleaning of vacuum deposition systems etc.Performs simple installations that may involve, for example, nitrogen gas, compressed air, water/plumbing and standard electrical power connections.Fills in, maintains and upkeeps electronic and/or print records relevant to work tasks performed, e.G. equipment log books, maintenance records, cleanroom user logs, etc.Sources parts required for lab equipment repairs, installations, etc., following guidance by supervisors.Oversees user conduct in the cleanroom and informs supervisors of any relevant issues.Helps on the training of cleanroom users by delivering inductions and training sessions for certain processes and equipment, as required, following guidance by supervisors.Devotes the required time and effort for continuous on‑the‑job‑training, which is an important aspect of the role.Offers time, skills and expertise to other Blusson QMI labs, as instructed by supervisors and the Facilities Director.Consequence of Error/JudgementErrors in judgement, mishandling of tools and neglect in following standard procedures could lead to the reduction of service available to the Institute affiliated UBC research groups and external users,



cause damage to expensive equipment and endanger the technician’s own health and safety, as well as the health and safety of other lab users and those in the vicinity. The position is central to the operation and delivery of services in Blusson QMI’s cleanroom facility. Poor performance or errors in judgement may impact timely provision of services required by research, in particular students, who are working to strict timelines. Issues with data quality could impact those researchers as well as the reputation of the facility and the University. Errors in performing the responsibilities of this position could also lead to unsafe laboratory conditions, which may jeopardise the safety of facility users and the role holder. Poor decisions could cause financial loss to the Institute via failure to collect money owing for use of facilities and exposure to liability or damage to equipment or facilities.Supervision ReceivedWorks under minimal supervision where possible. Reports to Blusson QMI’s Facilities Director, who determines the broad direction and operational requirements of the role, and who may also offer training and guidance. Position also receives more specific supervision and guidance from the Research Associate, Microfabrication, and the Electron‑Beam Lithography & Process Engineer, as requested.
