Work environment
Geospatial technicians are specialists; they are members of the Army but may be called upon to support all CAF exercises and operations, including those conducted by the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, and Canadian Special Forces. They also support other Government of Canada projects and various allies. Most work is performed in an office environment in Canada, using high-tech workstations and specialized software. They are employed in units across the Navy, Army, Air Force, and Special Forces, training on bases and in the field, and deployed in operations. Throughout their careers, they may be assigned internationally and have opportunities to participate in national and international exercises and training.

If you choose a career in the Regular Force as a geospatial technician, after completing the required training, you will be assigned to your first posting. Positions are available at most major bases across the country, offering exciting and agile work supporting planning, exercises, operations, and intelligence.

Recruitment programs
Direct enlistment options and subsidized study options are available.

No prior work experience or career-specific skills are required.

CAF recruiters can help determine if your personal interests and qualities match this profession.

This position requires candidates to have completed at least Grade 11 or Secondary 5 in Quebec, including the applied mathematics course of Grade 11 or Math 426 in Quebec. Foreign studies may be recognized.

Instructive and subsidized study programs
Since the position requires specialized training, CAF will pay tuition for recruits enrolled in an approved college program. Students in the PIESMR program undergo basic military training and on-the-job training during summer months. Full-time salary includes medical and dental care, as well as paid vacations. In exchange for college tuition coverage, candidates agree to serve in the CAF for a specified period. Interested candidates should apply through CAF and the appropriate college.

Training
The first step is Basic Military Qualification Course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. This course teaches basic skills and common military knowledge, with a focus on maintaining physical fitness standards. Geospatial technicians are trained at the military mapping school located at Algonquin College in Ontario, a detachment of the Ottawa Mapping Service. Training covers topics such as:

Combat space analysis and visualization products

Mathematics and surveying

Photogrammetry

Remote sensing software and data

Geographic information systems and data

Geospatial data production
