About the Opportunity

Heart Lake First Nation is excited to expand Kohls School to include Grades 7 and 8 , creating new opportunities for students to continue their learning journey within their own community. We are seeking an enthusiastic, caring, and innovative Junior High Teacher who is passionate about student success and committed to delivering engaging, culturally responsive education. The successful candidate will play an important role in establishing and growing our new junior high program while helping students develop academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally.

Working alongside the Heart Lake education team, the teacher will help create learning experiences that are holistic, culturally relevant, and personally meaningful , while preparing students for success in high school and beyond.

Responsibilities

- Plan and deliver engaging instruction for Grades 7 and 8 in line with the Alberta curriculum.
- Develop and monitor individual student learning plans.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning styles, abilities, and interests.
- Foster strong literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Integrate technology and innovative teaching practices into classroom instruction.
- Incorporate Indigenous perspectives, land-based learning, and culturally relevant teaching practices throughout the curriculum.
- Provide hands-on, experiential, and community-based learning opportunities.
- Administer assessments to monitor student growth and achievement.




- Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and student records.
- Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that supports student wellbeing.
- Establish positive relationships with students, families, Elders, and community members.
- Collaborate with the Principal, Education Coordinator, support staff, and fellow teachers to ensure students receive holistic supports.
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, school events, and community activities.
- Support extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities for junior high students.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The successful candidate will demonstrate:

- Strong knowledge of the Alberta Junior High curriculum.
- Ability to teach multiple subject areas within a Grades 7–8 classroom.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction and inclusive educational practices.
- Excellent classroom management skills appropriate for early adolescents.
- Understanding of trauma-informed and relationship-based teaching practices.
- Understanding of First Nations culture, traditions, and worldviews.
- Commitment to culturally responsive education.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.




- Ability to work collaboratively within a small school environment.
- Ability to establish respectful relationships with students, parents, Elders, and community

leadership.
- Flexibility, creativity, and willingness to help build a growing school program.

Qualifications

- Bachelor of Education.
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for certification).
- Experience teaching Grades 7–9 preferred.
- Experience working with First Nations students or Indigenous communities is considered a strong asset.
- Experience teaching in multi-grade or small school settings is an asset.
- Willingness to participate in community events and cultural activities.
- Current Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check (or ability to obtain).

Remuneration Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
