Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director, Student Engagement, the Residence Advisor plays a key role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive living environment for students residing on campus. As peer leaders, Residence Advisors enhance the student residence experience by building community, providing guidance and support, and helping residents navigate university life and available resources.

Residence Advisors contribute to the university's mission by promoting student wellbeing, safety, personal development, and community engagement. Through mentorship, programming, and proactive outreach, they help create a positive residential experience that supports students' academic and personal success.

Residence Advisors are current Royal Roads University students who reside on campus in private suites. They serve as a primary point of contact for residence students and work collaboratively with Student Services, Operations, and Resilience teams to support the effective operation of residence communities.

Through their visible presence, leadership, and responsiveness, Residence Advisors help cultivate a welcoming and connected campus environment.

Job Requirements

- Current student in an RRU program
- Must have a student conduct record free of significant non-academic violations.
- Availability from August 15th, 2026 to August 1, 2027
- Experience dealing with difficult situations and people in distress.
- Ability to exercise a high level of judgement,



diplomacy and tact and to respect and maintain confidentiality in sensitive and/or volatile situations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and community members.
- Strong intercultural competence and understanding of the values of equity, diversity and inclusion
- Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and establish trust with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Strong conflict management and coaching skills
- Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a busy and dynamic work workplace.

Additional Information

This competition is only open to RRU Students This is a temporary, part time position working 16 hours per week. However, days and hours of work may vary and may be irregular. It is anticipated that longer hours and more frequent shifts will be required in August, September and April.
There is also a requirement to be on-call evenings and weekends from time to time. This position has an hourly wage of $24.50. Due to the part-time nature of this position, it does not quality for the University's benefit plan, however, we are pleased to offer 4% in lieu of vacation time.

As there is an expectation that the incumbent lives on campus, this position includes onsite housing at the Nixon Building on the Colwood Campus which is a taxable benefit. The incumbent is required to purchase the standards University meal plan.
