About the Program
Sackville Heights Community Centre is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and creative instructor to lead our new Active Kids program for children ages 6–10.
Active Kids is designed to get children moving, playing, trying new activities and having fun in a positive and welcoming environment.
This is a recreational program rather than formal sports instruction. The instructor will have the opportunity to develop and lead a variety of activities based on their experience, interests and the needs of the participants.
The program will include two one-hour sessions each evening:
Schedule
- One evening per week
- Wednesday or Thursday evening
- Approximately 6:00–8:30 p.m., including set-up and clean-up
- Final day and schedule will be determined based on facility and instructor availability
Applicants are asked to indicate whether they are available Wednesday, Thursday, or both evenings. What the Program Could Include The successful candidate will have flexibility to create a fun and varied program. Activities may include:
- Sports and recreational games
- Basketball, soccer and other sports
- Obstacle courses
- Relay races
- Team challenges
- Dodgeball and tag games
- Agility and coordination activities
- Parachute and cooperative games
- Minute-to-Win-It challenges
- Scavenger hunts
- Themed activity nights
- Other creative ways to keep children active and engaged
We are looking for someone who can bring energy, creativity and enthusiasm to the program and create an experience that children will look forward to each week.
Responsibilities
- Plan and lead engaging activities appropriate for children ages 6–10
- Adapt activities to suit the different age groups,
abilities and interests of participants
- Create a positive, encouraging and respectful environment
- Supervise participants and maintain appropriate behaviour expectations
- Ensure activities are conducted safely
- Set up and put away equipment as needed
- Communicate with the Program Coordinator regarding the program and participant needs
- Provide a variety of activities throughout the session
- Help create a fun and welcoming experience for all participants
Qualifications & Experience We are looking for someone with experience working with children through recreation, sports, camps, coaching, education, fitness or similar programs.
Experience in one or more of the following is an asset:
- Recreation programming
- Children's programs or camps
- Youth sports or coaching
- Physical education
- Fitness or group activities
- Education
- Child and youth programs
- After-school programming
The successful candidate will be:
- Energetic and enthusiastic
- Creative and able to develop fun activities
- Reliable and responsible
- Comfortable leading groups of children
- Patient and encouraging
- Organized and professional
- Comfortable working with children with a range of abilities and personalities
Requirements
- First Aid/CPR certification required or must be obtained prior to the start of the program
- Vulnerable Sector Check required
- Previous experience working with children is required
- Ability to commit to one evening per week
- Availability on Wednesday and/or Thursday evenings
Compensation Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications.
