Description The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Animal Research Technician. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

- Participating in the maintenance of laboratory facilities, equipment, day-to-day operations, safe management of hazardous materials, and ordering supplies for the laboratory when required
- Participating in laboratory lab meetings, data and project discussions
- Performing animal colony management and performing routine animal care procedures
- Promoting and respecting diversity and inclusion in the workspace. Participating in maintaining a collaborative culture within and outside the laboratory/Animal Facility
- Performs animal colony management, including but not limited to setting up breeding pairs, weaning mice, ear notching for animal identification and genotyping, blood sampling for genotyping, colony cleaning, and assessing general animal health and reports problems to the Principal Investigator, Laboratory Manager and Veterinarians

Qualifications / Requirements

- Animal Health Diploma required; may consider past husbandry experience with research related animals in a research or other relevant scientific/medical/institutional setting
- A minimum of 3 years work experience related to animal husbandry, animal care and colony management in a University/research facility is required
- High level of proficiency working with animal monitoring and tracking systems (MOSAIC) including other air-flow and water handling technologies in the HSARC facility
- Attention to detail is crucial in following procedures and standard operating procedures
- Ability to keep accurate and detailed records is vital
- Requires high degree of analytical skills in carrying out technical procedures with a high impact of error
- In-depth knowledge of theory, procedures and skills in areas of specialized husbandry and complex technical procedures
- BSc/MSc in Biochemistry and Molecular biology/Immunology would be highly desirable
- Good communication skills required to interact with Managers, laboratory members, other HSARC staff members,



Researchers and facility users
- A sound knowledge of CCAC guidelines, University and Departmental policies & procedures and Health Canada Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines
- Experience working in a research laboratory as an Animal Research Technician would be an asset
- Excellent communication, written and organizational skills
- Ability to manage different priorities and meet deadlines
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to work independently in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Maintains the highest level of discretion, integrity, and trust in all dealings. A high degree of confidentiality at all times is requested
- A successful and dedicated team player, able to make significant contributions towards the collective efforts and success of research projects
- Must be able to perform heavy lifting and standing for long periods of time
