The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto.

Effective start date is December 1, 2026 or shortly thereafter.

The Microbiologist-in-Chief and Medical Director is responsible for collaboratively leading the Department in achieving operational and academic goals, including high-quality clinical impact, education, and research. To support the ongoing growth and development of the Microbiology Department, we are seeking a visionary, strategic leader to build on existing strengths, while shaping the future trajectory of the Department. The Chief will work with operational and medical leaders at Sinai Health and the University of Toronto to develop and implement a forward-thinking,



renewed strategy for the Department in alignment with Sinai Health’s Strategic Plan – Discovering and Delivering Life Changing Care, the hospital’s Quality Aims and the University’s priorities, reflected in the Sinai Health Research Strategic Plan.

The Department Chief will also work with the Sinai Health Foundation to develop and facilitate philanthropic funding. These deliverables are supported through a dyadic leadership structure.

The Microbiologist-in-Chief leadership role is positionally associated with the Dr.

Donald Low

Chair in Infectious Diseases, a Sinai 100 Chair. Established to enable academic growth and impact in the field, the Chair honours Dr.

Donald

Low's legacy of excellence in research, education, mentorship, and clinical leadership. The successful candidate will articulate a vision for advancing clinical innovation, scholarship, and collaborative research in microbiology and infectious diseases while translating discoveries into improvements in patient care and public health, consistent with the expectations of a Temerty Faculty of Medicine endowed chair.

Requirements The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and have or be eligible for licensure in Ontario. They should have specialty certification in Medical Microbiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for a senior academic appointment (Associate Professor or Full Professor)



in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of academic excellence and scholarship consistent with the expectations of a University of Toronto endowed Chair.

The successful candidate will be a role model, with superior leadership qualities, strong operational management skills, and demonstrated commitment to mentoring junior faculty and fostering partnerships within the hospital and the broader academic and healthcare community. They will have a demonstrated ability to create and maintain a workplace and learning environment that is respectful, safe for all staff, trainees and patients.

Salaried remuneration for leadership and clinical microbiology activities is commensurate with qualifications, trajectory and associated time commitment and exceeds $375,000 per annum.

The Microbiologist-in-Chief is expected to continue active medical practice. The position is for a 5-year term, renewable once, based upon a successful review.
