Infant Support Worker – Respite Care

About This Role

Respite Edmonton is seeking a reliable and compassionate Infant Support Worker to provide one-on-one respite care for a 9-month-old infant in the Spruce Grove/Edmonton area.

This is a hands-on role involving infant care, personal care, medication support, daily routines, and close supervision.

Experience supporting children with hydrocephalus, shunts, neurological conditions, or medically complex needs is required.

What You’ll Be Doing

Responsibilities may include

- Providing safe, attentive supervision
- Diapering and personal care
- Feeding according to the child’s established routine
- Supporting naps and sleep routines
- Providing age-appropriate play and engagement
- Comforting and soothing the child
- Supporting positioning and mobility as appropriate
- Providing medication support according to the established care plan
- Following parent-provided routines, instructions, and care plans
- Communicating relevant observations or concerns to the parents
- Supporting occasional walks or appropriate community activities

Medical & Specialized Experience The successful candidate must have relevant experience supporting children with medical, neurological, or complex care needs, with experience involving hydrocephalus or shunts strongly required.

You should be comfortable

- Learning the child’s individual care needs and baseline
- Following detailed care and emergency instructions
- Monitoring for changes and communicating concerns promptly
- Following parent direction regarding the child’s care
- Responding appropriately if additional support or assistance is required

Seizure awareness and medication experience are assets. Workers are not expected to diagnose medical conditions or independently make medical decisions.



All care is provided according to the established care plan and appropriate direction.

Scheduling

Shifts may include

- Daytime
- Evenings
- Weekends
- Casual or ongoing respite

Hours will be coordinated based on the family’s needs and the worker’s availability. More consistent hours may become available depending on client needs.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced and confident caring for infants
- Patient, calm, and attentive
- Comfortable with hands-on personal care
- Reliable and consistent
- Able to follow detailed instructions
- Professional and respectful when communicating with families
- Comfortable working independently
- Adaptable to the child’s changing needs

Relevant experience as a Health Care Aide, Personal Support Worker, Support Worker, Nurse, nursing student, Early Childhood Educator, or similar professional is an asset.

Requirements
- Demonstrated experience caring for infants
- Experience working with children with medical or neurological needs
- Experience with hydrocephalus and/or shunts
- First Aid & CPR Level C — can be completed upon offer
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector — can be completed upon offer




- Clear Child Intervention Record Check — can be completed upon offer
- Strong communication and reliability
- Ability to follow a family-directed care plan

Driver’s License and reliable transportation are assets. If transportation is required for a specific client, the worker must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and appropriate auto insurance coverage. Physical Requirements The worker should be comfortable with the physical demands of infant care, including:

- Sitting and playing on the floor
- Frequent movement throughout a shift
- Diapering and personal care
- Feeding and positioning
- Lifting and carrying an infant as required for routine care
- Participating in appropriate home and community activities
