The Opportunity:

Communications Strategists contribute to the overall positive reputation of the City of Airdrie, both internally and externally, by providing communications expertise and strategic guidance for multi-departmental and corporate-wide projects, policies, and initiatives. The Communications Strategists also serve as key resources in supporting Council priorities and focus areas.

This role’s portfolio is primarily responsible for providing strategic communications support to the Mayor and Council, including advising on communications approaches, issues management, stakeholder engagement, and public-facing messaging. In addition, the role works collaboratively with and provides backup support to other Communications Strategists as required to ensure consistent, coordinated communications support across the organization.

Responsibilities include

- Provide communications support and expertise for Mayor and Council
- Provide media relations support for subject matter experts (SMEs), senior management, Mayor and Council, as required
- Responsible for leading interdepartmental, high-level plans, policies and projects
- Act as subject matter expert and represent the Communications,



Engagement and Marketing department in issues management. Act as a Public Information Officer (PIO) and provide expertise in crisis communications as required
- Act as the delegate to the Team Leader when required
- Provide mentoring and expertise, acting as a support resource for Communications Advisors and Communications Assistants.
- Create and implement complex strategic communications plans for delegated departments
- Build and maintain relationships with senior management and departments, understanding their needs and their audiences
- Responsible for the implementation of strategic advertising and marketing strategies for complex projects and initiatives
- Maintain communication channels (i.e., City of Airdrie website, and social media). Generate, edit and maintain online and social media content in support of communications plans and projects

You Bring:

- Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field
- The following would be considered an asset:
- SCMP (Senior Communications Management Professional) or ABC (Accredited Business Communicator) or similar accreditation in a similar field
- Incident Command System (ICS) 300
- Basic Emergency Management (BEM)
- Public Information Officer (PIO)
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in communications with progressively increasing responsibility and work experience in large scale projects and initiatives
- Municipal government experience
- Experience supporting elected officials or board members in Communications and Media Relations
- Experience with issues management/crisis communications
- Experience developing and executing complex strategic communications/marketing campaigns
- Digitally savvy with experience in social media content management on behalf of an organization
- Knowledge and experience as a Public Information Officer (PIO)
- Knowledge of Airdrie would be an asset
- High degree of professionalism, initiative, independence, confidentiality, tact and diplomacy
- High degree of political acumen with proven good judgement on approaches to political issues




- High degree of organizational awareness and the ability to prioritize work based on the organization’s needs
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with proven creativity in crafting content
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build skilled rapport and work collaboratively with client groups
- Exceptional time management skills
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects and competing priorities

This is a full-time position that works 37.5 hours per week.
