Acting Subject Area Coordinator- First Nations Education & Social Studies

REPORTING AUTHORITY:

The position of SAC – First Nations Education & Social Studies reports to Director of First Nations Education and works in a supportive role of all 29 schools in Anglophone School District-North to implement the Holistic Curriculum Framework and Indigenous Education.

DESCRIPTION:

The successful individual will be responsible for the development of culturally appropriate resources, professional learning, and curriculum implementation in Anglophone School District-North to address the Truth & Reconciliations Call to Action 63.

- Developing and implementing Kindergarten to Grade Twelve curriculum and learning resources on Aboriginal peoples in Canadian history, and the history and legacy of residential schools.
- Sharing information and best practices on teaching curriculum related to residential schools and Aboriginal history.
- Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.
- Identifying teacher-training needs relating to the above.

The individual will work closely with the ASD-N curriculum team to support teachers, schools, and administrators in the integration of Indigenous content into the classroom and school practices. It is expected that the individual will have a robust knowledge of First Nations history, ways of knowing, understanding, and learning. This knowledge will assist teachers in applying Indigenous pedagogical practices and building culturally safe schools. The successful individual will be respected by their peers for their knowledge of First Nations education, policy, and their understanding of the New Brunswick public school system. In addition, the individual will be expected to have knowledge of the humanities and social sciences as well as best and emerging practice in the teaching of social studies. The position requires an individual dedicated to improving educational outcomes and supporting First Nation communities in their educational needs.



The successful candidate must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and have strong interpersonal, organizational, and relationship building skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

- Promoting awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture and history in ASD-N
- Supporting the Director of Curriculum and Instruction as a member of the curriculum team
- Supporting the Director of First Nations Education in managing the programs and services provided to First Nations students, families and communities by the school district
- Work with teachers, PLC's, schools, and administrators to assist in the integration of Indigenous content into classroom and school practices
- Supporting the Director of First Nation Education in the development and maintenance of strategic district First Nations Education plan in coordination with the District Regional Enhancement Education Committee
- Supporting the maintenance of First Nations Education Plans of First Nations Education committees and act as district coordinator for activities associated therein as assigned by Director of First Nations Education
- Providing advice and recommendations regarding First Nations programs and services to district and school personnel
- Responding to general inquiries regarding programs and services for First Nations students and communities
- Coordinating the assessment and selection of instructional curricula, programs, supplementary materials, pilots and field tests in conjunction with Indigenous and social studies stakeholders
- Identify professional development requirements of teachers, in cooperation with the Director of Curriculum & Instruction, and other educational staff, and plan for appropriate in-servicing and execution
- Establishing and maintaining a collection of curriculum material and resources associated with portfolio




- Providing proactive programs and initiatives designed to support FN students achieve their potential and creating networks of internal and external supports and resources.
- Maintaining awareness of First Nations issues and First Nations Education programs through reading, workshops, conferences, and active membership in professional associations
- Maintaining effective communication and positive relationships with First Nations families of students and First Nations communities
- Designing and implementing initiatives focused on strengthening Indigenous identity and pride and working collaboratively with school and district staff.
- Organizing cultural awareness training and initiatives, as needed, for school administration, staff, and students with the objective of increasing understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions.
- Other duties may be assigned

Qualifications:

- A valid New Brunswick Teacher's Certificate
- Master's Degree (relevant professional learning and experience may serve as an alternative to Master's Degree)
- Training and experience in Educational Support Services would be beneficial
- A minimum of five years relevant teaching experience in the public or Band-operated school system and the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff, teachers, administrators, students, parents and First Nations Community leaders.
- A demonstrated knowledge, ability, skill, and competence to perform the required tasks in the specified areas.
- Effective communication, administrative, organizational, and human relation skills.
- Experience working with First Nations students, communities and/or organizations in a strategic relations and/or project management role.

A general knowledge of First Nations governance systems, Mi'kmaq language and culture, the First Nations demographics of New Brunswick, and the history of First Nations education in Canada.
