Primary Learning Guide — Kindergarten to Grade 3
Part-Time | Oakville, Ontario | $22–$27/hour
About Basecamp
Basecamp is an after-school learning studio for students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.
We combine personalized academics with the attention and care of a small learning environment. Rather than moving every child through the same worksheets at the same pace, we identify where each student is, what they’re ready for next, and build their learning plan around them.
Our goal is simple: help children love learning, learn faster, and build skills that last.
The Role
We’re looking for an exceptional Primary Learning Guide to take a leading role with our youngest learners, primarily students in Kindergarten through Grade 3.
Young children need more than someone who knows the curriculum. They need an educator who understands how early learners think, how to keep them engaged, when to challenge them, and when to slow down and build confidence.
You’ll work with students individually and in very small groups, generally up to three students at a time, using Basecamp’s learning plans, curriculum resources, assessments, and teaching systems.
As an early member of Basecamp, you’ll also have the opportunity to help us refine how we teach and support our youngest students as the program grows.
What You’ll Do
- Teach students from Kindergarten through Grade 3 in reading, writing, phonics, early literacy, and mathematics
- Work with students individually and in small groups of up to three
- Adapt instruction to each child’s ability, pace, and learning needs
- Identify gaps in foundational skills and help students build them systematically
- Challenge students who are working beyond grade-level expectations
- Use hands-on activities, manipulatives, games,
conversation, and other age-appropriate strategies to make learning engaging
- Observe student progress and maintain clear, concise learning notes
- Help students develop confidence, independence, focus, and positive learning habits
- Provide insight into student progress that can be incorporated into parent updates and learning plans
- Collaborate with the Basecamp team to continually improve our primary learning experience
Who We’re Looking For You might be a classroom teacher, OCT-certified educator, ECE/RECE, teacher candidate, retired teacher, or experienced primary educator.
Your title matters less to us than your ability to teach young children exceptionally well.
You should have
- Strong experience working with children in Kindergarten through Grade 3
- Excellent understanding of early literacy, phonics, reading development, writing, and foundational mathematics
- A warm, patient, confident presence with young children
- The ability to make learning engaging without turning every lesson into entertainment
- Strong classroom and behaviour-management instincts
- The ability to recognize when a child doesn’t understand something and explain it differently
- High standards while remaining encouraging and supportive
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Reliability and professionalism
Knowledge of the Ontario elementary curriculum is strongly preferred. OCT certification or ECE/RECE credentials are an asset, but not required for the right educator with substantial primary teaching experience.
What This Role Is Not
This isn’t a traditional tutoring position where you’ll sit beside one student and help them finish tonight’s homework.
Basecamp focuses on the underlying skills that determine how well a child learns. You’ll be expected to understand each student, identify what they need next, and teach intentionally.
We provide the structure, resources, student plans, and support. You bring excellent teaching.
Schedule
This is a part time, in-person position at our Oakville learning studio.
Most sessions take place during after-school hours on weekdays, with potential Saturday availability.
We’re especially interested in someone who wants to grow with Basecamp rather than simply pick up occasional tutoring hours.
Compensation
$22–$27 per hour, depending on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability working with primary students.
Why Basecamp?
You’ll be joining at an unusually exciting stage: early enough to influence how the program develops, but with a clear educational model, dedicated learning environment, and systems being built to support you.
You’ll teach in very small groups, have the flexibility to meet students where they actually are, and spend your time doing what great educators do best — helping children make meaningful progress.
If you’re the kind of educator who can make a six-year-old feel safe, curious and capable while still holding them to a high standard, we’d love to meet you.
Pay: $22.00-$27.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
