Causeway, through The CHO Recreational Program, is designed to provide adults with SMI, living in CHO homes in the Ottawa area, with recreational activities both in homes and in the community at large. The goal being to increase participation and integration into community-based events, promoting social inclusion and to help provide clients with the tools to create meaningful relationships.
About the Role The Employment & Community Services Staff play a key frontline role in delivering inclusive, client-centered support to individuals living with mental illness and facing diverse barriers to employment. As the first point of contact for all Causeway clients, this position/team is responsible for generating referrals, conducting intakes, providing information, crisis intervention, facilitating service navigation and supporting access to both community and employment resources.
Working collaboratively in a team environment under the guidance of the Manager of Employment & Community Services, the Employment & Community Services Staff helps maintain a welcoming and well-resourced Employment Resource Centre. The role also involves facilitating workshops, collaborating with internal programs and social enterprises to identify and address service gaps in service gaps, and engaging in outreach and presentations to both clients and community partners.
Grounded in a strong commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive and supportive environment, this position ensures that clients feel welcomed and empowered in their journey toward employment and community integration.
Accurate data entry in EMHware and consistent achievement of program targets are essential responsibilities to support both agency and funder expectation and to enhance client outcomes.
Duties & Responsibilities
· Act as the first contact between the referring agency and / or client(s), providing information, intakes and assessments
· Provide feedback to referring agencies on referral criteria
· Provide off-site service to community partner organizations
· Participate in tours, presentations and community networking events, promoting Causeway programs & services
· Develop strong working relationships with agencies throughout the city of Ottawa /(and) Eastern Region
· Provide referrals to internal and external community supports for clients requiring specialized or tailored supports or services
· Ensure the distribution of brochures and other promotional materials to agencies in the city of Ottawa and throughout the Eastern region
· Gather and update relevant information on programs and services available to clients in the Ottawa area
· Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the Employment Resource Centre, ensuring all persons entering feel valued, heard and supported
· Provide motivation and support to ERC drop in or scheduled job seekers to help identify their strengths and areas for growth. Assist with career exploration, creating tailored resumes and cover letters, job applications, faxing, support with ODSP/OW reporting, social enterprise onboarding and transition support
· Maintain an up-to-date resource library for job seekers, including job listings, career development material, educational material and community support programs and services
· Stay on top of labour market trends and ensure Labour Market Information is gathered and posted for a variety of industries
· Deliver engaging pre-employment workshops covering topics such as resume building, interview skills, job search strategies, workplace etiquette, etc. from time to time, ensuring that workshop content and teaching methods are inclusive and adaptable to cater to a wide range of learning styles and abilities
· Provide de-escalation, crisis support and referrals as required
· Administrative duties including but not limited to: Client files including maintaining accurate records of client participation and outcomes, OCANS, surveys, statistics & EMH ware data entry in line with Funder and Agency policy
· Work alongside & provide mentorship to students & volunteers
· Understand and adhere to all agency policy
· Work a flexible schedule with advance notice
· Additional duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
· Education: Post-secondary diploma or degree completion mandatory
· Experience: Minimum 3 years supporting vulnerable people experiencing complex barriers
· Language: English essential; Bilingual (English/French) considered a robust asset
· First Aid/CPR required; training can be provided
· Recent and valid Police Record Check required
· Proven experience/knowledge of mental health, addictions, disabilities, homelessness and barriers to employment including recognizing symptoms, providing appropriate support and connecting individuals to the right services
· Experience in employment supports, job development or other employment programming positions considered a strong asset
· Strong understanding of the local labour market trends and resources for vulnerable persons in our community
· Broad understanding of community organizations and the services they can provide to vulnerable clients
· Confident networking and presentation skills
· Effective time management, organization and strong leadership skills
· Exceptional communication, skills both written and oral with ability to adapt and accommodate different learning styles and skill level
· Strong de-escalation skills, experience and ability to address potential conflict or crisis situations in a calm, rational manner with clients’ need at the center of decision making
· Exceptional problem solving and critical thinking skills
· Ability to multi-task, organize &prioritize; work to meet deadlines
· Strong knowledge of Microsoft office applications/database management
Working Conditions
Working with vulnerable people who have various barriers to employment, including those with mental illness, addictions, housing instability or homeless, disability and more. Work schedules may vary and include evenings or weekends as required. Occasionally working offsite in settings that may be dynamic and/or unpredictable (i.e. shelters, homeless encampments, parks, community hubs/centers, etc.)
Remuneration and Contract Period
As per the contract agreement. This is a unionized position.
