The Engineering Technologist is responsible for undertaking engineering-based evaluations of development proposals to ensure conformity with relevant provincial and Conservation Authority policies, regulations, and guidelines. Collaboration with engineering and planning staff at ERCA, the region’s municipalities, as well as landowners and their agents, to resolve concerns related to development applications is required, along with supporting broader ERCA initiatives and projects associated with water resources and natural hazards management. This position reports to the Water Resources Engineer in the Watershed Management Services Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Reviews and provides engineering related comments on development applications, proposals, and technical studies (internal and external) under the Conservation Authorities Act, Planning Act, Environmental Assessment Act, and related legislation, from a water resources engineering and natural hazard management perspective.
- Ensures development proposals and related technical matters are consistent with ERCA regulatory and policy requirements and other related guidelines.
- Conducts site/field visits in support of development applications, proposals, client inquiries, and other engineering related activities.
- Meets with and provides advice to private landowners, municipalities, and others requesting information and/or assistance in flood and erosion control, drainage, stormwater management, and related natural hazard matters.
- Prepares reports, technical drawings and designs; provides technical specifications and cost estimates; performs related engineering calculations; and carries out site inspection and field surveys for select projects on private and public lands.
- Conducts on-site inspections and directs select construction projects and makes on-site decisions as to minor modifications to design and procedures.
- Assists the Flood Duty Officer(s)



as required to monitor flood conditions and provide support as needed in accordance with ERCA’s Flood Contingency Plan.
- Participates, as required, in the updating and refinement of ERCA policies, guidelines, and strategies relating to water and natural hazard management, adhering to sound engineering practices/principles.
- Directs and monitors Term/Special Grant employees, as required.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the position as required.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or related post-secondary education and two years work experience in a similar role or a combination of experience and education deemed acceptable to the employer.
- Designation as a C.E.T. and/or experience in water resources / stormwater management is an asset.
- Excellent customer service (both external and internal) through effective interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to display tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated organizational, team and project management skills with excellent problem solving, analytical skills.
- Must be proficient with Office365 (Word, Excel, etc.), SharePoint, Engineering software (AutoCAD/LDD and related modeling software)
- One year experience in surveying, drafting, and map interpretations and a working knowledge of water management techniques.
- Must possess an MTO Class “G” Driver’s licence in good standing

WORKING CONDITIONS

- Typically Monday -Friday, 8:30am to 4:00 pm. Evening hours may occasionally be required for attendance at meetings (Council and otherwise) and occasional overtime on short notice.
- Hazards and Risks: Risks are associated with site visits and potential for interaction with landowners and/or the public.



Site visits requiring prolonged standing/walking, negotiation of obstacles, and bending or stooping; and carrying survey and other equipment, with potential exposure to inclement weather, heat and cold.
- Environmental conditions: Work is primarily performed within a standard office workplace, and regularly requires periods of visual and mental concentration of 2 to 4 hours duration, prolonged sitting (and associated physical strain), and accuracy and attention to detail
