Black Engineers of Canada (BEC) is a Not-for-Profit Professional Organization geared towards providing a safe environment for Black Engineers where they can aspire and become a better version of themselves. We empower and uplift the Black Engineers community, including youth and aspiring engineers, by advocating for equitable opportunities, enhancing living conditions, and promoting mental health improvement. We achieve this through robust mentorship programs, impactful networking events, innovative educational initiatives, safe spaces for difficult conversations, and dedicated research efforts.

We are searching for an Executive Director of Marketing & Communications (Volunteer) who will handle the following responsibilities by dedicating approximately 5 hours weekly of volunteer time.

Role Summary The Volunteer Executive Director of Marketing & Communications serves as a strategic leader guiding our organization’s overall messaging, brand identity, and community outreach. This position leads, mentors, and empowers a team of dedicated volunteer specialists across social media, content creation and web management. Working closely with executive leadership, you will oversee the strategic direction of our communications to elevate our mission and amplify the voices of the Black engineering community. Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Develop and champion a comprehensive, multi-channel communications strategy aligned with organizational goals; establish benchmarks to measure impact across all functional teams.

Team Leadership & Capacity Building: Recruit, guide, and support a volunteer team and foster a collaborative, high-performing setting.

Brand Strategy & Consistency: Oversee overall brand governance, tone of voice,



and messaging standards across all public-facing platforms and internal updates.

Public Relations & Media Strategy: Guide high-level media outreach, partnership opportunities, and crisis communication strategies; act as or appoint key organizational spokespersons.

Digital & Web Oversight: Review and approve overarching strategies for digital engagement, website development, email marketing, and social media campaigns executed by your team.

Stakeholder & Executive Collaboration: Work alongside the Board of Directors and event leaders to align communications with major programs, sponsorships, and organizational milestones. Qualifications

Proven Leadership: 5+ years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, with direct experience leading, managing, or mentoring teams.

Strategic Vision: Ability to translate high-level organizational goals into actionable, delegated campaigns across digital and traditional media.

Mission Alignment: Deep passion for supporting Black engineering communities, advancing diversity in STEM, and engaging diverse audiences.

Communication Excellence: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to represent the organization to external partners and media.

Tool Familiarity: Strategic oversight knowledge of marketing suites, social management platforms, email software, and collaborative tools (e.g., Slack, Canva, Mailchimp, WordPress).
