About the Role

We’re looking for a hands-on engineering leader who enjoys building high-performing teams as much as building great technology.

As our Fractional Director of Engineering, you’ll oversee the day-to-day operation of our engineering team while working closely with the CEO to ensure projects are delivered successfully, engineers are supported, and our development processes continue to evolve.

This role combines technical leadership, engineering management, mentoring, project oversight, and operational execution. You’ll become the primary engineering leader responsible for helping the team stay organized, productive, and focused while allowing the CEO to spend more time on customers, partnerships, and company growth.

What You’ll Be Responsible ForEngineering Leadership

- Lead the day-to-day operation of the engineering team.
- Coordinate priorities across multiple client and internal projects.
- Ensure engineers have clear direction, priorities, and support.
- Monitor project progress and proactively identify risks and roadblocks.




- Balance engineering resources across competing priorities.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Engineering Operations
- Run engineering planning meetings and project reviews.
- Improve engineering workflows and development processes.
- Track engineering metrics, project health, and team capacity.
- Improve planning, estimation, and engineering execution.
- Maintain visibility into schedules, deliverables, and project risks.
- Ensure engineering documentation and development practices remain consistent.

Project Delivery
- Ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Review project plans, schedules, and engineering estimates.
- Coordinate activities across hardware, firmware, cloud, and QA teams.
- Help remove technical and organizational blockers before they impact customers.
- Maintain a high standard of engineering quality across all deliverables.

Technical Leadership Provide technical oversight and guidance across projects involving:
- Embedded firmware (C/C++)
- RTOS-based systems
- Embedded Linux
- Electronics and PCB design
- Cellular and wireless IoT
- Industrial communications
- Cloud-connected systems
- Manufacturing and product commercialization
- Product validation and automated testing

While this role isn’t expected to perform all technical work directly, you should be comfortable reviewing designs, mentoring engineers, asking the right questions, and helping guide sound engineering decisions.

Team Development

- Mentor junior and intermediate engineers.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings.
- Provide coaching and technical guidance.
- Participate in hiring and technical interviews.
- Help develop career paths and professional growth opportunities.
- Build a positive, supportive engineering culture.

Strategic Leadership




- Work closely with the CEO on engineering priorities and resource planning.
- Participate in customer meetings as senior technical leadership.
- Support project scoping, technical proposals, and engineering estimates.
- Help define quarterly engineering objectives.
- Continuously improve how Simply Embedded delivers engineering services.

What We’re Looking ForRequired
- 10+ years of engineering experience.
- 5+ years leading engineering teams or technical organizations.
- Strong background in embedded systems and electronics product development.
- Experience delivering commercial products from concept through production.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Comfortable working in a consulting environment with multiple concurrent projects.
