Housing/Homeless prevention initiative Program Coordinator
This position will work to reduce and prevent homelessness in Houston by providing a range of activities and services for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The position will work collaboratively with community partners, landlords and tenants. The position reports to the Executive Director and/or Program Manager.
Description of Duties
- Housing Services
- Providing services that lead to an individual or family transitioning into more stable housing that has been deemed appropriate and safe.
- Determining needs and preferences for housing and types of support.
- Assist with rapid re-housing, where necessary, including the potential for time limited rental assistance.
- Providing landlord-tenant services including mediation and training on roles and responsibilities of tenants and landlords.
- Assistance with re-housing if necessary.
- Administer the emergency housing funding within the parameters set by the community.
- Activities to assist with setting up a housing unit including assistance with some costs.
- Prevention and Shelter Diversion
- Assist participants with obtaining or retaining housing including shared housing.
- Landlord liaison and intervention to prevent eviction and preserve tenancy.
- Advocacy and representation to avert eviction and referral to legal services where necessary.
- Provide emergency assistance to avert eviction (subject to committee approval and having exhausted all benefit options).
- Provide assistance with moving costs where necessary.
- Client support services
- Provide client support services including individualized services to help improve integration and connectedness to support structures, including basic needs and treatment services.
- Economic Integration services: including access to benefits, employment assistance and education and training assistance.
- Supports to help improve social integration in the community.
- Coordination of Resources and Data collection
- Collection of data to demonstrate accountability, support decision making and develop an understanding of the homelessness situation.
- General Duties
- Responsible for ensuring that the program stays within budget.
- Maintains statistical records and reports of all activities.
- Maintains a daily descriptive journal of all activities.
- Submits a monthly written report to the Executive Director.
- Attend job related in services, workshops and meetings as required including staff meetings and network meetings.
- Conducts program inventory.
- Conducts program evaluation.
- Other tasks as required.

Qualifications and Qualities required:
- Working towards (or willing to work towards) a diploma/certificate in social work
- Experience working with individuals and families who are at risk of being homeless would be an asset.
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization, coordination, research, and time management skills.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to different situations and changing tasks in order to meet client and program needs.
- Genuine interest in working with individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
- Positive knowledge of the community and the services available.
- Able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Good computer skills, including Microsoft office and social media.
- Ability to work creatively, problem solve and collaborate with team members and partners.
- Experience working with people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
- Must have completed Grade 12
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have own transportation available.
Position term:
Full time, subject to funding.
As soon as possible, to Mar 31, 2027, subject to probationary period.
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Starting at $28 per hour. Benefits available after probation period.
