About Kikosewin

Kikosewin — a Cree word meaning the act of being with family — is the Hub of the East Edmonton Indigenous Supporting Family Resource Network, operated by Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society. Kikosewin connects children, youth, and families to coordinated, culturally grounded services and supports across the network.

Position Summary The Child Development Specialist delivers the Infant and Child Development spoke's Intensive Services stream:individualized, relationship-based, in-home support for families whose children (ages 0–12) are experiencing developmental, attachment, or behavioural/emotional regulation concerns, and whose caregivers are navigating parenting stress, family disruption, or limited access to supports. This is a full caseload, one-worker model (Specialist Split): the Specialist carries the entirety of the spoke's Intensive Services caseload — approximately 20–25 families — while ICD Facilitators deliver the spoke's Universal and Targeted programming.

Key Responsibilities

Intake and Assessment

- Receive referrals from internal spokes, schools, community partners, and self-referral
- Conduct intake conversations and developmental/eligibility assessment to determine fit and prioritization
- Determine eligibility collaboratively with the Supervisor using consistent criteria and professional judgment

Individualized Service Delivery





- Co-create individualized support plans identifying goals, priorities, and strategies with caregivers
- Deliver primarily in-home support, with community or hybrid delivery where appropriate
- Adapt intervention focus as family needs, developmental strategies, caregiver capacity-building, advocacy, and coordination with other service providers
- Review and update service plans regularly through supervision and family check-ins

Documentation and Reporting

- Complete Individualized Support Plan, Progress Report, and Transition/Closure documentation to program standard and within required timelines
- Contribute caseload and outcome data to the spoke's monthly stat sheet and reporting cycle

Transitions

- Lead structured, collaborative transition planning when intensive service ends
- Connect families to ongoing supports — targeted or universal ICD programming, cultural supports, or community agencies — to protect continuity of care

Qualifications

Education

- Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a related field

Experience

- Direct experience with young children (0–12) and their caregivers, including families facing complex needs
- Experience with individualized planning, goal-setting, and progress monitoring

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Child development
- Trauma- and violence-informed, strengths-based, culturally grounded practice
- Safety planning and risk assessment.



Knowledge of when and how to escalate or coordinate with other systems
- Strong documentation practice under time pressure
- Cultural safety and understanding of intergenerational trauma's impact on Indigenous families

Other Requirements

- Valid driver's licence and reliable vehicle in-home visits across Edmonton are core to this role
- Satisfactory Child Intervention Check and Police Information Check
- First Aid/CPR (or willingness to obtain)

Salary

- Salary plus mileage for travel
- Paid sick and wellness days after 3 months’ probation (pro-rated)
- Extended Health Benefit (50/50 cost sharing) after 6 months’ employment.
- Working approximately 34.5 hours per week

Supervision and Support Regular one-to-one supervision with the ICD Spoke Supervisor, team meetings, and reflective practice discussions. Case consultation is available for complex or high-risk situations. Cultural safety training, trauma-informed practice training, and ongoing professional development are provided.

Working Conditions

Work is delivered primarily in family homes across Edmonton, with occasional community or Hub-based delivery. This role involves emotionally demanding work with families experiencing significant stressors; reflective supervision and debriefing support are built into the role.

Pay: $49,100.00-$51,555.00 per year
