About NHC
Northwest Hydraulic Consultants Ltd. (NHC) is an international firm of engineers, geoscientists, and technologists providing professional services for the development, management, and protection of water resources with a particular focus on coastal and riverine environments. A career within the coastal team at NHC has you working with like-minded professionals in the fields of geomorphology, engineering, and hydrology, and supported by surveyors, field technicians, and GIS specialists in a cooperative and learning-focused work environment.
About the Role
NHC is seeking an early-career professional to join its coastal team in British Columbia (to be based in either Vancouver or Nanaimo) to support on a variety of projects. Working within a team of highly trained and motivated colleagues, you will have the opportunity to implement innovative coastal geoscience and engineering methods to address challenges related to natural coastal hazards (e.g., flooding, erosion, sedimentation) and shoreline design in the context of climate change and variability. The successful candidate will work closely with and under the direction of experienced geomorphologists and engineers performing geomorphic, met-ocean, and coastal analyses as well as regional, local and site-scale coastal geomorphic hazard and risk assessment and nature-based coastal design. Our projects involve science-based management and engineering solutions for both natural and constructed systems. NHC is a leader in the design and implementation of coastal solutions that follow nature-based design principles.
You will typically work as part of a project team and be involved in multiple coastal projects at a given time.
Work assignments may include supporting and conducting field assessments in coastal and estuarine settings, conducting historical data analysis and geomorphic interpretation, supporting conceptual and numerical modeling of coastal morphodynamical systems, data analysis, nature-based design, and preparation of geoscience and engineering reports.
Required Skills and Experience:
- BSc with specialist post-graduate training in coastal geomorphology, geology, coastal engineering, oceanography, or a closely related field. Relevant coursework and/or research should be listed in resume or discussed in cover letter.
- At least one year of post-graduate experience in a related field.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to solve geoscience and engineering problems and work collaboratively on project teams.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s or doctoral degree in coastal geomorphology, coastal engineering, oceanography, geoscience or a closely related field.
- Registration or eligibility for registration as a professional geoscientist or engineer in BC.
- Experience working on geoscience and engineering projects that include problem evaluation, environmental assessment, and design including alternatives analysis, planning, design, and construction.
- Experience with field survey and/or met-ocean data collection.
Describe experience/training as it relates to coastal processes.
- Experienced in conceptualization, analytical methods, and numerical modelling with respect to hydraulics, coastal processes, sediment transport, sediment budgets, and geomorphic processes and change in coastal and estuarine environments.
- Proficiency in GIS and/or Civil 3D software programs. Please describe level of experience.
- Please list any experience with specific models, if any, on your resume.
- Applying basic programming (such as: Python, matlab, or other analytical tools) to manage and analyze large datasets.
