Position Summary
ALCO Oil & Gas is seeking a Junior HSE Advisor to support our fabrication and machine shop operations in Nisku, Alberta. The successful candidate will help maintain a safe, compliant workplace for employees, subcontractors, visitors, and other stakeholders.
This hands-on position is well suited to an early-career safety professional who is comfortable working directly with shop personnel, conducting regular floor inspections, providing practical coaching, and supporting the consistent application of ALCO’s health and safety management system.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and help maintain a safe working environment for employees, subcontractors, visitors, and stakeholders.
- Support the effective implementation and ongoing administration of occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ensure required HSE documentation is accurate, current, properly maintained, and consistently used.
- Monitor compliance with company policies, safe work practices, procedures, and applicable legislative requirements.
- Maintain strong knowledge of Alberta occupational health and safety legislation and other regulations applicable to fabrication and machine shop operations.
- Conduct regular shop-floor walk-arounds, workplace inspections, observations, and formal audits.
- Provide employees and supervisors with ongoing safety coaching, guidance, and constructive feedback.
- Identify unsafe acts, conditions, and emerging hazards, and work with operational personnel to implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Lead and support safety campaigns, toolbox meetings, orientations, and employee training initiatives.
- Assist in developing and delivering safety communications and awareness materials.
- Compile and provide timely, accurate HSE statistics, trends,
and performance reports.
- Track corrective actions arising from inspections, audits, hazard reports, and incidents through to completion.
- Participate in incident and near-miss investigations, including evidence collection, interviews, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action development.
- Prepare clear, accurate incident investigation reports and assist in communicating lessons learned.
- Support hazard assessments, job safety analyses, and safe work procedure reviews.
- Participate in emergency preparedness activities, drills, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, employees, subcontractors, and management to strengthen ALCO’s safety culture.
Qualifications & Experience:
- A valid National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is required.
- Two to four years of related experience supporting occupational health and safety programs, preferably in oil and gas, fabrication, machining, manufacturing, construction, or another industrial environment.
- An occupational health and safety certificate or diploma is considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of Alberta occupational health and safety legislation and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Standard First Aid with Level C CPR and AED certification.
- Valid H2S Alive certification issued through an approved Energy Safety Canada training provider.
- Valid CSTS 2020 certification.
- Current WHMIS 2015 training.
- Valid driver’s licence and satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Ability to successfully complete pre-employment or pre-access drug and alcohol testing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook,
and Access, with the ability to learn and work across multiple software programs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective organizational, documentation, and statistical-reporting abilities.
- Sound judgment and the confidence to identify concerns, provide coaching, and recommend corrective actions.
- Ability to build and sustain positive working relationships with employees, supervisors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work overtime when operationally required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- This is a hands-on, shop-based position requiring regular interaction with fabrication and machining operations.
- Ability to conduct frequent walk-arounds and remain on your feet for extended periods in an active industrial environment.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.
- Willingness to work around operating machinery, welding activities, fabrication processes, noise, dust, and changing shop conditions.
- Ability to safely access all applicable work areas and respond promptly to workplace concerns.
