We are currently looking for a Leading Power Plant Technician II (Shift) (Industrial Electrician and Instrumentation Tech.) to join our Power Production team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for directing and performing routine maintenance, trouble shooting, calibration and installation of instrumentation and monitoring equipment and all electrical equipment throughout the generating station at our Point Aconi location.
Key Elements Of This Role Include
As a Leading Power Plant Technician II (Shift):
- You will be responsible for directing and performing troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning on electrical / electronic equipment.
- You must develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the purpose and operation of all electrical equipment, including PLC's and solid-state relaying.
- You will be responsible for performing monthly, semi-annual, annual maintenance checks, and assisting with equipment overhauls and outages.
- You will be responsible to assist and support the supervisor with leading and directing a highly skilled work team on a daily basis and may be assigned acting duties of the supervisor in his/her absence from time to time.
- You will be responsible to promote safety, environmental awareness, teamwork, and work efficiency.
- You will be expected to participate in continuous improvement activities and to support all aspects of the work planning process.
- You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
- Under the direction of the Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for ensuring the plant operates safely, as prescribed in Nova Scotia Power Inc.
Operating
Practices and the Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations, and within the environmental stipulations prescribed in the Environmental Operating Permit.
- You will be responsible for assisting the Controls Supervisor with due-diligence activities, data compilation, and reporting related to the plant's Environmental Management System and environmental performance as it is related to the ISO 14001 processes and initiatives.
- You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
- Position will support day shift 7- 3pm with the expected/occasional need for overtime based on operational needs.
You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. This position is considered a safety sensitive position.

you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:
- Candidates must either be a full-time employee recognized as a PPTII (Instrument Technician) by Nova Scotia Power or possess a Diploma in Instrumentation Controls Technology or a Certificate as an Instrument Controls Technician from an accredited program.
- A Red Seal Journeyperson Instrument Controls Technician would be an asset.
- Candidates must have an Industrial Electrician Red Seal Person Certification.
- You must have 5 years’ experience maintaining electrical equipment and instrumentation equipment as found in a generating station or similar industry.
- You must have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
- You must be proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment and software use and programming in an industrial setting.
- You must have demonstrated leadership skills, be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, have a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
- Applicants will be required to demonstrate acceptable color vision for operation of control monitoring equipment.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities Conditions And Physical Capabilities (Instrumentation Technician)
- Must be able to lift 37 lbs. from the floor to shoulder level on an occasional basis and 10 lbs. above shoulder level. Able to carry 37 lbs. with both hands on an occasional basis, with the overall ability to carry 30 lbs.
- Able to push and pull with upper and whole-body strength on an occasional basis up to 50 lbs.
- Perform static reaching at waist to shoulder level frequently and from below waist level to overhead on an occasional basis.
- Perform frequent standing and sitting.
- Perform occasional bending, stooping, walking and neck flexion, extension, and rotation movements. Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing on a minimal basis.
- Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple to firm grasp while performing turning and pinching motions.
Conditions And Physical Capabilities (Industrial Electrician)
- Must be able to lift 60 lbs. from the floor to waist level on a minimal basis. Able to carry 60 lbs. with both hands on a minimal basis, with the overall ability to carry between 12-16 lbs. on an occasional basis. Able to push and pull between 50-100 lbs. with whole and upper body strength on an occasional basis. Perform static reaching at waist level on a frequent basis, below waist level on an occasional basis and from shoulder to overhead level on a minimal basis.
- Perform frequent standing, walking, sitting, and neck flexion movements.
- Perform occasional sitting, bending, stooping, forward flexional movements and neck rotation movements.
- Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and neck extension movements on a minimal basis.
- Stack climbing and repair work on equipment throughout the generating station and participation in specialized environmental testing routines will also be required.
- Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple grasp while performing pinching motions.
