JOB SUMMARY:

Sagamok Anishnawbek is seeking a dedicated and community-focused individual to serve as the Community Librarian. Reporting to the Senior Curriculum Facilitator, the Community Librarian is responsible for managing the community library collection and providing accessible library services that support lifelong learning, literacy, and community engagement. The successful candidate will foster a welcoming environment while promoting literacy, preserving knowledge, and encouraging the appreciation of Anishinaabe culture and history.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Plan, coordinate, and deliver library programs and services that reflect the needs of the community, with a strong focus on intergenerational literacy, reading initiatives, storytelling, book exchanges, and community engagement.
- Assist library users in accessing print, digital, and archival resources by conducting reference searches, facilitating interlibrary loans, retrieving archival materials, and promoting the ethical use of information, including copyright, fair use, and intellectual property guidelines.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the library by cataloguing and circulating materials using the library management system, maintaining an organized and welcoming library environment, and ensuring resources are accessible to all users.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate annual library and literacy work plans in collaboration with the Senior Curriculum Facilitator; communicate regularly regarding priorities, programming, and library operations.
- Build and maintain partnerships with schools, libraries, agencies, and community organizations to enhance library services and programming.
- Provide orientation, guidance, and training to students, volunteers, and part-time staff as required.
- Work flexible hours, attend meetings and career development opportunities, and perform other related duties as assigned.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

- Hold,



or be willing to obtain, CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for work-related travel.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and protocols is essential.
- Ojibway language skills and cultural knowledge are considered strong assets.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
- Must sign and maintain an annual oath of confidentiality.
- Must provide a Criminal Records Check (CPIC)/Vulnerable Sector Screen valid within six months.
- Incumbent is subject to a six-month probation period.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

- A Library and Information Technician Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with one (1) to two (2) years of experience working in a public or community library; or
- A college diploma in Education, Social Services, or a related field with relevant experience; or
- A secondary school diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum of two (2) years of related work or volunteer experience and a demonstrated commitment to developing library knowledge and skills through formal education.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and library management software.
- Robust organizational, interpersonal, communication, and multitasking skills with sound judgment and reliability.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with children, youth, adults, Elders, and community members.
- Knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, history, traditions, and customs.
- Fluency in, or knowledge of, Anishinaabemowin is considered an asset. A willingness to learn is encouraged.
