This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Life and Critical Illness Underwriting Co-Signer based in Canada.
This is a senior underwriting role focused on delivering high-quality, competitive decisions across complex and high-value life and critical illness insurance cases.
You will combine deep technical underwriting expertise with coaching and mentorship to strengthen the capabilities of the broader underwriting team.
The role offers the opportunity to influence decision quality, risk management, customer experience, and business outcomes.
You will work closely with underwriters, underwriting leaders, Risk Management, medical specialists, research teams, and new business partners.
The position also plays an important role in preparing underwriting teams for a digital future through data, technology, and AI-enabled decision support.
Success requires sound judgment, strong communication, curiosity, and the ability to balance risk, service, development, and business priorities.

Accountabilities:
- Evaluate and make life and critical illness underwriting decisions for applications with approval limits of up to $10 million, ensuring alignment with underwriting philosophy, risk appetite, guidelines, and regulatory expectations.
- Co-sign complex, high-value, and development-focused files by reviewing underwriting approaches, evidence requirements, documentation, decision rationale, and potential customer or advisor impact.
- Coach and mentor underwriters through practical case reviews, feedback sessions, office hours, and structured learning to strengthen technical expertise, judgment, confidence, and readiness for higher approval limits.
- Promote consistent application of medical, financial, non-medical, product, and persistency underwriting principles and sound risk management practices.
- Help underwriters understand the broader business implications of their decisions, including requirement ordering, amendments, advisor communication, cycle time, customer experience, persistency, and competitive positioning.
- Support efficient management of co-signing and underwriting activities while maintaining high standards of quality, service, and development.
- Encourage the effective use of digital tools, data-driven insights, and AI-enabled decision support to improve underwriting efficiency and decision quality.
- Collaborate with underwriting leadership, Risk Management, Research, medical directors, and new business teams to support consistent decisions and a seamless customer and advisor experience.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes, documentation, training approaches, requirement ordering, tools, and workflows.
- Contribute to case clinics, training sessions, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and continuous improvement programs that strengthen future underwriting capabilities.
- Monitor and contribute to key performance areas including decision accuracy, co-signing consistency, underwriter development, service levels, cycle time, knowledge sharing, and adoption of future-ready underwriting practices.
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in life and critical illness underwriting, with demonstrated experience handling complex and high-value cases.
- Strong technical knowledge of life and critical illness underwriting, including medical, financial, non-medical, product, and persistency considerations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Health Sciences, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Professional underwriting designations or progress toward credentials such as FALU, FLMI, ACS, or equivalent are highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring, coaching, and developing underwriters through case reviews, structured learning, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
- Strong analytical, critical-thinking, judgment, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risk, challenge assumptions, and apply guidelines within a broader business context.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex underwriting decisions clearly and constructively to underwriters, leaders, advisors, and internal stakeholders.
- Comfortable working with underwriting technology, digital tools, data insights,
and AI-enabled decision-support solutions.
- Ability to encourage and support the adoption of new technologies and ways of working in a changing underwriting environment.
- Strong collaboration, curiosity, accountability, adaptability, and continuous-improvement mindset.
- Ability to balance risk management, service expectations, business priorities, and underwriter development effectively.
