MDSS Active Youth Program is designed to help youth with Down syndrome aged 9 to 17 build physical literacy skills, develop confidence in sport and recreation, and make meaningful connections with peers.
As a volunteer in the Active Youth Program , you will support children and youth with Down syndrome in participating in inclusive, fun, and engaging recreational activities. Volunteers help foster a safe, respectful, and encouraging workplace that promotes physical activity, social development, and confidence-building.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist program participants during physical activities, games, and group events
- Help with set-up and clean-up of program materials and spaces
- Promote positive peer interactions and inclusive participation
- Support individual needs while respecting independence and ability levels
- Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all participants
- Work collaboratively with MDSS staff and other volunteers
- Report any concerns or incidents to the Program Coordinator promptly
Skills Required
- Enthusiastic, compassionate, and reliable
- Comfortable engaging with children and youth of all abilities
- Able to follow directions and adapt to changing needs
- Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is an asset, but not required
- Must complete MDSS volunteer orientation and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (if over 18)
