: The Public Health Nurse works under the direction of the Manager of Public Health Nursing. As an integral member of the Public Health Services team, provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health Promotion Model. This employee works relatively independently and is expected to make primary decisions based on sound assessments in accordance with the Public Health Act, the policies of the Public Health Nursing program, the SRNA Standards of Practice, the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice, the Public Health Nursing Discipline Specific Competencies and other relevant legislation.

Public Health

Nurses translate knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health programs, promotion, prevention strategies and advocacy. This employee liaises with, and refers to, other health personnel, and other sectors and community groups.

Human Resources Exemption: No

Experience

- Minimum of 2 years recent experience as a public health nurse

Education

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Licenses





- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider Certificate (BLS-HCP)
- Valid Class 5 driver's license

Other Education and Training

- Immunization Competencies Course

Knowledge and Abilities

- Negotiation, conflict resolution and mediation skills.
- Ability to analyze health issues in the context of political & social climate
- Willingness to adhere to established Public Health policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates skill in group education, individual counselling and advocacy
- Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.
- Ability to use health promotion and prevention strategies for program planning
- High level accuracy/attention to detail required in all aspects of this position
- Demonstrated understanding of community development
- Demonstrates strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to develop and deliver formal education programs
- Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs.
- Requires sound knowledge of nursing process
