Position Details Position Information Position Title Part-Time Academic (ENGL 2218.03: Gothic Fiction) - Fall 2026 Posting Number PTAP3525P Department/Unit English Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities A part-time academic is required to teach ENGL 2218.03: Gothic Fiction , in the Fall term of the 2026-2027 Academic Year.

Course Description: This course examines a selection of gothic fiction from Horace Walpole onwards, and across national divisions, and may include such authors as Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, and Richard Matheson. Topics to be considered may include the significance of supernatural figures (ghosts, fetches, vampires, and so on), narrative forms, the representation of terror, and the gothic as a vehicle of social critique. The course is currently scheduled for Tuesdays/Thursdays 1605-1725.

This course is scheduled to be taught in-person. The part time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class including lectures, test preparation and evaluation, and grading. The position reports to the Chair of the Department.

Qualifications/Requirements Of Position Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in English or be in the final stages of a Ph.D. program.

Previous experience teaching world literature at the university level is preferred. All applications should include a curriculum vitae, contact information for two referees willing to submit confidential letters of reference, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.

Letter is optional. For each part-time academic the Chair will conduct an annual assessment of teaching performance, based on student ratings of instruction and may also include classroom observation,



conducted either by the Chair or a representative from the Centre for Learning and Teaching with reasonable advance notice.

Salary Range/Pay Rate As per CUPE Collective Agreement Additional Information All offers of employment as a Part-Time Academic are conditional upon sufficient student enrolment in the course and approval by the University.
