Job Title: Produce Clerk Department: Produce Department

Reports to: Store Manager, Produce Lead

Working Conditions: Retail Store environment where work and events can be varied or unpredictable; mainly standing/walking/lifting; offering service to the public.

Primary Purpose: Reporting to the Store Manager the Produce Department Clerk is responsible for assisting with the store’s daily operations, specifically operations within the Produce department.



Duties include providing support to produce department Lead; managing produce inventory; receiving shipments; stocking product; product merchandising; ensuring safe food handling practices; store cleanliness; assisting with processing customer transactions; and providing friendly, attentive and efficient customer service.

Time Requirements:

- This is an hourly position that works between 16-28 hours per week
- Employee is entitled to a 30 minute unpaid meal break for all shifts longer than 5 consecutive hours
- Must have a adaptable working availability - willing to work days, evenings and weekends and assist with shift coverage as needed

Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service and Teamwork

- Proactively engage customers to ensure unparalleled customer service ensuring we do everything we can to bring better health to our customers.
- Respond to customer questions and provide assistance or when necessary employ the appropriate department representative to provide assistance.
- Assist customers with product inquiries, share product knowledge and take customers to the location of product directly.
- Be knowledgeable about, and advise customers of current store promotions and programs.
- Ensure daily department checklists are being followed and completed.

POS and Frontline Service

- Efficiently and accurately process customer transactions through the use of applicable POS functions.
- Keep the till area clean, well-stocked and organized.
- Engage with customers and educate them on upcoming sales days, current promotions and new products in store.
- Assist department employees on POS operations and provide ongoing support for POS operations ensuring operating procedures are being followed accordingly.

Receiving/Stocking

- Physically receive and verify shipments.
- Received stock is delivered on the retail floor in a timely manner, placed accordingly, rotated by correct best before dates or freshness.




- Report any quality issues on shipments to department lead in a timely manner.
- Ensure price tag identifiers are 100% accurate and match product when stocking.
- Manage back-stock in a proactive and team oriented manner.

Produce Quality

- Provide and maintain the highest product quality possible for our customers.
- Cull produce on a rotating schedule in order to maintain the highest quality on the sales floor.
- Report any product concerns to department lead.

Qualifications and Attributes:

- Previous produce experience or equivalent in a food services position considered an asset.
- AHS Food Safety Certification or equivalent as recognized by AHS is an asset.
- Ability to work with a flexible attitude in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to prioritize and complete projects in a timely manner.
- Excellent organization and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of organic and natural foods industry and produce and/or perishable products an asset.

Basic Physical Requirements:

- Stand for extended periods of time. Walk, bend and twist your body, reach above and below shoulders.
- Use of mops, brooms, cleaning products, knives, box cutters, carts, computers and printers.
- Use ladders of varying heights up to 12 feet.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs maximum.
- Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and typing.
- Environmental exposure to extreme temperatures in coolers, freezers, and outdoors.
