QHPC Summary
Queen’s High-Performance Computing (QHPC) is the university’s first supercomputing club, designed to give students hands-on experience with cutting-edge high-performance computing systems. Through structured sprints, workshops, and competitions, members gain practical skills in parallel programming, cluster management, and large-scale AI training - no prior experience required.
Whether you're looking to boost your career, compete internationally, or simply explore the power of supercomputing, QHPC offers an inclusive, project-driven community where you can learn, build, and innovate alongside like-minded peers.
2026-27 marks our second year since EngSoc ratification. Building on the foundation established in our first year, we plan to expand our programming and pursue participation in competitions such as Student Cluster Competition (SCC) and SCC Connect , and explore research topics at the intersection of high-performance computing, education, and machine learning. QHPC currently operates through a general club structure comprising Co-Presidents, a Technical Director, an Administrative Director, managers, and general members.
A dedicated competition team is expected to be formed during the academic year as preparations for SCC and SCC Connect progress.
Position Overview
The Technical Director is the backbone of everything QHPC does from a technical standpoint. They are responsible for the delivering educational content, maintaining technical infrastructure, and ensuring competition readiness of the club. Members will look to them for hands-on HPC knowledge. Their primary responsibilities include:
- Designing, scheduling, and leading technical workshops and tutorials throughout the year (e.g., Linux command line, Slurm job scheduling, HPC architecture, parallel programming with MPI/CUDA, Python performance optimization, etc.).
- Acting as the main technical point of contact with faculty advisors and graduate mentor to curate relevant, up-to-date HPC content and secure any technical resources they can offer.
- Leading the technical preparation for any HPC-related competitions (e.g., Student Cluster Competition, hackathons) – this includes scoping hardware, software dependencies, cloud credit requirements, and team training schedules.
- Managing and maintaining the club's technical infrastructure (e.g., GitHub organization, shared repositories, access to any provided computing clusters or cloud credits).
- Overseeing the technical onboarding process for new members – assess their current skill levels and group them appropriately so beginners aren't overwhelmed and experienced members stay challenged.
- Collaborating with the Administrative Lead to forecast and budget for technical expenses (e.g., cloud computing credits, competition registration fees, software licenses).
- Keeping thorough technical documentation – ensure all lesson plans,
code examples, and workplace setup guides are saved in a shared location (e.g., GitHub Wiki or club Google Drive)
The Technical Lead will be reporting directly to the Co-Presidents and working closely alongside other executive members.
