As a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), you will deliver enhanced perioperative nursing care within the operating room.

You will work in close collaboration with surgeons and the perioperative team, assisting within the RNFA scope of practice and supporting patients throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care.

Responsibilities will be in accordance with Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) guidelines and organizational policies. This role emphasizes evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient advocacy, and continuity of care in a fast-paced, technologically evolving environment. Your ability to adapt, think critically, and make sound clinical decisions will be essential to delivering safe, high-quality care.

Professional Development Chance

Candidates who are not yet RNFA-certified are encouraged to apply if they have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing at least five years of current operating room experience, including intraoperative experience, and meet the RNFA Program admission requirements set by the National Institute of First Assisting (NIFA).Successful applicants may be eligible for employer- supported RNFA certification through a structured education program delivered in partnership with NIFA. Participation in the Program will require a Return for Service Agreement. The program is full-time and approximately 6 months in duration; timelines may vary based on service delivery, location, Canadian Nursing Association examination schedules and individual learner progression.

Successful completion of the program is a condition of employment. Travel may be required.

Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions,



care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity.

The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications

Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) required.

Basic Life Support Healthcare

Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, completion of an accredited RNFA program, and a minimum of five (5) years of perioperative nursing experience. Candidates must also demonstrate strong leadership and mentorship abilities; excellent communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills within a highly complex interdisciplinary environment; and proficiency in critical thinking, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. The role requires adaptability in a fast-paced surgical setting, effective time management, and the ability to stand scrubbed for extended periods while wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to apron radiographic protection, to safely support the surgical team.

Preferred Qualifications

Canadian Nurses Association certification in Perioperative Nursing, CPN(C).

Advanced Cardiac Life

Support (ACLS) certification.

Pediatric Advanced Life

Support (PALS) certification.

Experience providing staff education, mentorship or clinical instruction. Demonstrated ability to support the development of others.

Experience leading or supporting change initiatives, quality improvement, participating in clinical research or advancing evidence-informed practice. Previous RNFA experience.
