As a Registered Nurse, come join the Home Parenteral Therapy (HPT) program! Our multidisciplinary team is responsible for assessing patient referrals and coordinating the use of home intravenous medications and fluids. Reporting to the HPT Manager, this designated float position requires you to work out of the University of Alberta Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital and work closely with care unit staff, home care, physicians, and other health care providers to develop and implement patient care plans. Assessment: Identify changes in patients health patterns and formulate nursing diagnoses and patient outcomes. Determine patient suitability to participate in the HPT program and involve members of the health team in ongoing care and discharge planning. Planning: Formulate patient care plans based on nursing knowledge and HPT policies/procedures. Coordinate arrangements to meet patient’s discharge needs. Implement care plan: Implement the nursing and medical treatment plans as directed. Perform nursing interventions to assist the patient to manage health issues. Recognize and report unexpected symptoms, changes in condition or adverse drug reactions to the physician. Evaluate Care Plan: Evaluate and document the patient’s and family’s response to care. Modify the care plan based on reassessment of the patient’s condition and progress. Demonstrates excellent organizational, decision making, teaching, time management and communication skills. Proven ability to work independently, effectively, and collaboratively within a team. Must have physical ability to perform all duties (bending, crouching, lifting) and withstand long periods of walking and standing. The RN performs patient visits within the hospital and must be able to manually operate an ambulatory pump and lift/carry patient medications/supplies up to approximately 20 lbs.

PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.

Additional Required Qualifications: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing. 5 years of recent acute care nursing experience. Must have the physical ability to perform all duties (bending, crouching, lifting). Must be able to withstand long periods of walking and standing as this role requires frequent patient visits to multiple units across the hospital campus.

Also, must be able to manually operate and program the ambulatory pumps and lift/carry patient medications and equipment up to approximately 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Home Parenteral Therapy experience.

Short Term Intervention

Team (STIT) experience. Knowledge and skills of Adult and Pediatric patient care practices.

Experience in IV therapy and Central Venous Access Devices. Competence with Netcare and Connect Care.

Experience with ambulatory pumps.
