Company Description

Carol Lake Metal Works (CLMW) is a Labrador West based fabrication and industrial services company supporting the mining, construction, and heavy industrial sectors.

We specialize in heavy fabrication, equipment rebuilds, structural steel, custom components, and engineered solutions for some of the region’s largest mining and industrial operations.

Our work ranges from large mining equipment and structural fabrications to custom repair and rebuild projects where accurate measurements, practical design, and close coordination between drafting, engineering, and the shop floor are critical.

At CLMW, we take pride in producing safe, practical, high quality solutions while continuously improving how our products are designed, fabricated, documented, and supported.

Role Description

The Drafting Technician is a full time, on site position based in Labrador City, NL. This individual will play an important role in supporting CLMW's fabrication, rebuild, and industrial projects by producing accurate and practical technical drawings, 3D models, and documentation for shop and field use.

The successful candidate will work closely with our drafting and engineering team, supervisors, project personnel, welders, machinists, and customers to take projects from initial measurements and concepts through detailed fabrication drawings and final as built documentation.

This is a hands on technical position. The role will regularly involve working directly with components and equipment in the shop or field, taking measurements, utilizing 3D scanning technology, confirming existing conditions, and developing drawings and models that can be effectively used by our fabrication teams.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare detailed 2D and 3D fabrication drawings, models, assemblies, and technical documentation using CAD software.
- Develop drawings for heavy fabricated components, structural steel, mining equipment, repair components, and custom industrial applications.
- Interpret engineering drawings, customer specifications, sketches, field measurements, and existing components.
- Take accurate field and shop measurements of equipment, structures, assemblies, and components.
- Operate and utilize 3D scanning equipment to capture accurate dimensional data from components, assemblies, structures, and large industrial equipment.
- Process and interpret 3D scan data and point clouds to support reverse engineering, dimensional verification, CAD modelling, and the development of accurate fabrication drawings.
- Use 3D scanning technology to document worn or damaged components and compare existing equipment against original drawings, specifications, or CAD models.
- Perform on site and shop scanning of mining equipment, structural components,

and fabricated assemblies as required.
- Assist with reverse engineering existing, worn, or damaged components to develop accurate replacement and repair drawings.
- Convert field measurements and 3D scan data into practical CAD models and shop ready fabrication drawings.
- Produce shop ready drawings that clearly communicate dimensions, materials, tolerances, weld requirements, and fabrication details.
- Review drawings for dimensional accuracy, constructability, completeness, and practicality before release to production.
- Revise drawings and models based on engineering review, customer feedback, shop requirements, and field conditions.
- Work directly with supervisors, welders, machinists, and other trades to resolve drawing, fitment, or fabrication questions.
- Support quality control and dimensional verification by comparing completed fabrications with drawings, 3D models, and scan data.
- Maintain organized drawing files, revisions, CAD models, scan data, technical documentation, and drawing records.
- Prepare and maintain as built drawings following fabrication or field modifications.
- Assist with material takeoffs, bills of materials, and other technical documentation as required.
- Support continuous improvement and standardization of CLMW's drawings, templates, fabrication details, scanning processes, and drafting practices.
- Ensure drawings and documentation comply with applicable industry standards, customer requirements, and CLMW quality and safety expectations.

Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Equivalent practical drafting, fabrication, or industrial experience will also be considered.
- Strong proficiency with CAD and 3D modelling software. Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar platforms is preferred.
- Strong understanding of technical drawings, fabrication drawings, assemblies, and general drafting practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Understanding of dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, welding symbols, and fabrication practices.
- Experience with 3D scanning, point cloud processing, reverse engineering, or dimensional inspection technology is considered a strong asset.
- Experience integrating 3D scan data into SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD platforms is considered an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate and complete drawings.

- Comfortable taking measurements and performing 3D scanning in fabrication shop and industrial environments.
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, supervisors, tradespeople, customers, and other project stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and drawing priorities in a fast paced production environment.
- Strong organizational and document control skills.
- Ability to identify potential fabrication issues and work collaboratively with the team to develop practical solutions.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be considered an asset:

- Heavy metal fabrication
- Mining equipment and components
- Structural steel
- Welding and machining
- Equipment rebuilds and repairs
- Reverse engineering
- 3D scanning and point cloud processing
- Dimensional inspection
- 3D modelling and assemblies
- Field measurement and site verification
- Industrial construction or maintenance
- Bills of materials and material takeoffs

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who is more than a CAD operator. The ideal candidate understands that a good fabrication drawing needs to work on the shop floor.

The successful candidate will be comfortable getting out from behind the desk, working directly with our tradespeople, taking measurements, operating 3D scanning equipment, asking questions, identifying potential problems, and helping turn concepts and existing equipment into accurate, practical fabrication drawings and 3D models.

This position is well suited to someone who enjoys technical problem solving, heavy industry, contemporary scanning and modelling technology, and seeing their work progress from an initial scan or concept to a finished product on the shop floor.

Relocation & Housing Assistance

Carol Lake Metal Works welcomes qualified candidates from across Canada who are interested in building their career in Labrador West.

Relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate, along with housing assistance to help support the transition to Labrador City.

Our team will work with the successful candidate to help make their relocation and transition to the community as smooth as possible.

Specific relocation and housing arrangements will be discussed with qualified candidates during the recruitment process.

Why Join Carol Lake Metal Works

This position provides an opportunity to work directly with large scale mining and industrial equipment while using modern drafting, 3D modelling, scanning, and reverse engineering technologies.

You will have the opportunity to see projects through from field measurement and scanning to design, fabrication, assembly, and final installation, while working alongside experienced tradespeople and technical professionals.

If you enjoy solving real world fabrication challenges and want to see your designs become finished products, we would like to hear from you.
