Director of Legal Research (5+ Years)
The Opportunity
Our client, a highly regarded and growing construction-law boutique, is seeking a Director of Legal Research with 5+ years of relevant experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer who enjoys complex legal research, writing and analysis and is interested in a role focused on substantive legal work rather than traditional business development or file ownership.
The successful candidate will work closely with partners and lawyers across the firm, provide research and drafting support on complex matters, and oversee several leading Canadian construction-law publications.
What You’ll Be Doing
• Conduct comprehensive legal research involving construction law, liens, trusts, adjudication and related commercial matters.
• Prepare detailed research memoranda, legal opinions and case-law summaries.
• Draft facta and other court materials.
• Proofread and edit pleadings, briefs, witness statements and other litigation documents.
• Monitor legislative, regulatory and case-law developments affecting the construction industry.
• Oversee annual updates, new editions and reissues of leading construction-law publications.
• Draft articles and papers for legal journals, conferences and industry publications.
• Co-edit the firm’s newsletter.
• Prepare course materials for law-school classes taught by firm partners.
• Assist with reviewing and grading student papers.
• Research and prepare conference papers, presentations and supporting materials.
• Coordinate publication schedules and work with partners, contributors and publishers.
What We’re Looking For
• A law degree and at least 5 years of relevant legal experience.
• Exceptional legal research, analysis, writing and editing skills.
• Experience preparing research memoranda, facta,
legal opinions or other sophisticated written work.
• Strong understanding of Canadian law, legal research methods and court processes.
• Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing precise, authoritative work.
• Ability to manage major long-term publications alongside shorter-term file assignments.
• Strong organizational and project-management skills.
• A collaborative approach and the ability to work closely with lawyers across different practice areas.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
• Focus on sophisticated legal research, writing and thought leadership.
• Take a leading role in nationally recognized construction-law publications.
• Work directly with experienced and highly regarded construction lawyers.
• Contribute to litigation, legal education, conferences and professional publications.
• No traditional business-development expectations.
• Competitive compensation based on experience.
• Hybrid working arrangement in Toronto.
• Remote candidates may be considered if they can travel to Toronto approximately twice per month for several days.
• Excellent opportunity for long-term growth within a respected boutique firm.
