Your impact

Jacobs is seeking a Senior Air Quality Technician to support and lead the operation, maintenance, quality assurance, and reporting activities for a network of ambient air quality and meteorological monitoring stations throughout Lambton County. This senior-level role provides technical leadership for environmental monitoring programs while ensuring the reliability, accuracy, and regulatory compliance of monitoring systems and associated data.

Working closely with engineers, scientists, project managers, regulators, and clients, you will oversee monitoring network operations, lead field activities, provide technical guidance to junior staff, and support strategic program improvements. You will be responsible for advanced troubleshooting, quality assurance oversight, regulatory reporting support, and ensuring monitoring systems meet project objectives, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.

This position is primarily field-based and requires regular travel to monitoring locations, occasional overtime, and after-hours support to maintain critical monitoring operations and respond to equipment or network issues.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the operation, installation, calibration, validation, and maintenance of ambient air quality and meteorological monitoring equipment and monitoring networks.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to monitoring technicians and junior staff, including training, scheduling support, and field oversight.
- Serve as the primary technical resource for advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs, and performance optimization of analyzers, sensors, data loggers, telemetry systems, and related instrumentation.
- Ensure monitoring activities are conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, quality management systems, and project-specific quality assurance project plans.
- Oversee data collection, validation, auditing, and quality assurance processes to ensure accuracy, completeness, and defensibility of environmental monitoring data.
- Review and prepare technical reports, inspection records, data summaries, exceedance notifications, and regulatory documentation.
- Support environmental compliance and reporting programs by interpreting monitoring results and communicating findings to project teams and clients.
- Coordinate field activities, contractor support, equipment upgrades, and network improvements.
- Maintain inventory, spare parts, calibration gases,



and monitoring equipment resources to ensure operational readiness.
- Collaborate with clients, regulators, contractors, and internal project teams to resolve technical issues and support program objectives.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, operational efficiencies, and adoption of new monitoring technologies.
- Champion a strong health, safety, environmental, and quality culture while ensuring safe execution of all field activities.

Here's what you'll need
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in ambient air quality monitoring, environmental monitoring, instrumentation, industrial systems, or related technical field experience.
- Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing ambient air monitoring instrumentation and meteorological monitoring systems.
- Experience leading field programs, coordinating technical staff, or supervising monitoring operations.
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation principles, data acquisition systems, telemetry systems, and electronic troubleshooting techniques.
- Experience implementing and maintaining quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures and quality management systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, environmental databases, data management systems, and technical reporting tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to field locations.
- Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions with limited supervision.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and industrial environments.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection when necessary.

Ideally, You'll Also Have
- Diploma or degree in Environmental Technology, Environmental Science, Electronics, Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, Meteorology, or a related technical discipline.
- Extensive experience with ambient air quality monitoring programs and regulatory monitoring networks.
- Working knowledge of Ontario Ministry of the Workplace, Conservation and Parks (MECP), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and applicable local air quality regulatory requirements.




- Experience supporting environmental compliance programs, emissions monitoring, and regulatory reporting.
- Experience managing or leading monitoring station installations, modernization projects, and network expansions.
- Understanding of continuous ambient monitoring methods, calibration protocols, and performance audits.
- Experience developing, reviewing, and implementing work plans, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance project plans.
- Familiarity with telemetry systems, SCADA systems, environmental databases, GIS/GPS applications, and remote monitoring technologies.
- Project coordination experience, including budgeting, scheduling, resource planning, and client management.
- Professional certifications related to environmental monitoring, instrumentation, electronics, or occupational health and safety.

The base salary range for this position is $66,200.00 to $115,800.00. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across Ontario, Canada locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
