Senior Backend Java Developer

Location: Toronto, ON,

Work Model: Hybrid, 4 days per week onsite

Contract: 6 months, with potential for extension

Rate: $80 to $90/hour, with flexibility for the right candidate

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Java Developer to join a large enterprise technology environment working within Agile delivery teams.

This role is ideal for a senior developer with deep expertise in contemporary Java and Spring Boot who can contribute to complex backend solutions, provide technical guidance, and work closely with Product Owners, Architects, Delivery Managers, QA teams, and other stakeholders.

The successful candidate will work across modern and legacy environments, leveraging technologies including microservices, APIs, cloud platforms, CI/CD, AI-enabled development workflows, and enterprise data platforms.

Key Responsibilities

- Collaborate with Product Owners, Delivery Managers, SMEs, Architects, and technical teams to develop and recommend technical solutions.
- Assess user stories during each sprint, evaluate feasibility and complexity, recommend technical approaches, and identify potential challenges and impacts.
- Design, develop, and deliver high-quality backend solutions within established sprint and project timelines.
- Lead and participate in design and code reviews while ensuring development follows industry best practices and enterprise standards.
- Develop and automate unit and functional testing to ensure solutions align with business and technical requirements.
- Partner closely with QA teams on functional, regression, and performance testing.
- Integrate legacy systems with modern and emerging technologies where appropriate.




- Evaluate the performance impact of new solutions, code, and interfaces and implement approaches that maximize system performance and user experience.
- Apply Agile principles and DevOps practices throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Provide second-line support for existing applications running across OpenShift, Linux, and Mainframe environments.

Required Qualifications

Must Have

- 10+ years of professional Java development experience.

• 5+ years of hands-on experience with Spring Boot, including development of RESTful APIs, GraphQL APIs, and event processors.

- Expert-level knowledge of modern Java, including Java 17, 21, and/or 25, with strong coding and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Strong experience developing enterprise-scale backend applications and microservices.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and GitHub Actions.
- Experience developing automated unit and functional tests.
- Hands-on experience with AI tools and agentic workflows, including using AI to improve development quality and delivery speed.
- Experience with MCP, microservices, OAuth 2.0, SQL, object-oriented programming, design patterns, and application security.
- Strong understanding of Agile development practices and rapid delivery environments.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership, and manage multiple priorities.




- Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail and gap analysis capabilities.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with both business and technology stakeholders.
- Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies quickly.
- Experience developing solutions within large enterprise environments.

Preferred Qualifications

- Knowledge of IBM Master Data Management (MDM).
- Experience supporting Mainframe or J2EE applications.
- Front-end UI development experience.
- Experience with technologies such as Kafka, Maven, DB2, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, OpenShift, PCF, Linux/AIX, and Mainframe environments.
- Experience with development and monitoring tools including Eclipse, IntelliJ, VS Code, Dynatrace, Postman, SoapUI, ServiceNow, Kibana, Apigee, and Vault.
- Familiarity with DevOps and collaboration tools including GitHub, UrbanCode Deploy, Helios Pipeline, Snyk, SonarQube, Aqua, JFrog Artifactory, Jira, Confluence, and Mural.
