C/C++ Engineer

Location: Fully remote from Canada

Duration: 6-month contract (strong possibility of conversation to FTE)

Our client’s desktop engineering organization builds and maintains a widely used cross-platform desktop application. The Desktop Integrations team focuses on installation, software updates, and integration with host operating systems, particularly Windows and macOS.

This is a highly distributed team that works collaboratively across time zones. Much of the development process takes place in public repositories and issue trackers, so candidates should be comfortable working transparently, communicating asynchronously, and collaborating with engineers in a remote environment.

What You'll Do

- Develop and improve desktop application features related to installation, updates, and operating system integration.
- Enhance installation and update workflows using product and usage data to guide improvements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve platform-specific challenges involving low-level Windows and/or macOS integration.
- Partner with engineering leadership and team members to scope, prioritize, and execute technical work.

- Participate in code reviews and contribute to technical design discussions.
- Take ownership of complex issues affecting installation and update functionality.
- Work within established open-source development and code review processes.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers across a geographically distributed team.

Required Qualifications

- 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Systems-level programming experience on Windows or macOS.
- Strong programming experience with C and C++.
- Ability to work effectively within a distributed and asynchronous engineering environment.
- Robust problem-solving skills with the ability to break complex technical work into manageable tasks.
- Proven ability to independently drive work forward and meet project timelines.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience developing software with Rust.
- Experience working with Windows or macOS APIs at a lower level, such as Win32 or Cocoa.
- Familiarity with Linux or macOS internals.
- Contributions to open-source software or publicly maintained projects.
- Experience working on large-scale desktop applications.
