Fleet Maintenance & Operations Assistant – Evening Shift

Black Tar Construction is seeking a dependable, hands-on Fleet Maintenance & Operations Assistant to support our fleet and field operations during the Monday–Friday evening shift.

This position is ideal for someone who is mechanically inclined, organized, resourceful, and comfortable working independently. You will help keep our trucks, trailers, and construction equipment operational by completing basic fleet maintenance, responding to basic service calls, assisting with procurement, and preparing equipment for the following workday.

This is not a licensed mechanic position. We are looking for someone with practical mechanical knowledge who can identify problems, complete basic repairs, source required parts and supplies, and know when an issue needs to be escalated to a mechanic.

Key ResponsibilitiesBasic Fleet Maintenance

- Perform basic maintenance on company trucks, trailers, and construction equipment
- Complete routine greasing and preventative maintenance
- Perform visual inspections of fleet and equipment
- Replace or repair dump truck sideboards
- Replace basic parts and components when required
- Assist with minor repairs to trucks, trailers, and equipment
- Check for visible damage, leaks, tire concerns, lighting issues, loose components, and other deficiencies
- Identify potential mechanical problems before they result in unnecessary downtime
- Report larger mechanical concerns requiring a licensed mechanic or outside service provider

Service Calls & Field Support
- Respond to basic fleet and equipment service calls from field crews
- Travel to job sites when required to assess minor fleet or equipment issues
- Troubleshoot basic mechanical problems
- Complete minor repairs in the field when safe and appropriate
- Deliver replacement parts, tools, supplies, or equipment to crews when required
- Help determine when equipment can be safely returned to service or when further mechanical support is required
- Communicate service issues and completed work to Operations

Procurement & Parts
- Pick up required fleet parts,



tools, materials, and supplies
- Source basic replacement parts from local suppliers
- Assist with obtaining pricing and availability for required parts
- Ensure the correct parts and supplies are purchased for fleet repairs
- Maintain receipts, invoices, and purchasing documentation
- Help monitor commonly used fleet and shop supplies
- Identify items that need to be restocked before they become urgent
- Maintain an organized inventory of frequently used maintenance supplies and parts

Fleet & Evening Operations Support
- Help ensure trucks, trailers, and equipment are ready for the following day's operations
- Assist with moving and organizing fleet within the yard
- Complete evening maintenance priorities provided by Operations
- Support crews returning to the yard with fleet or equipment concerns
- Ensure maintenance concerns are documented for follow-up
- Keep the shop, maintenance area, tools, and supplies clean and organized
- Assist with other fleet and operational tasks as required

Schedule This is a Monday–Friday evening shift.

The position is specifically designed to provide fleet and operational support after our daytime crews are in the field and as equipment begins returning to the yard.

Candidates must have reliable Monday through Friday evening availability and be comfortable with a schedule that may occasionally vary depending on operational requirements and service calls.

Qualifications & Skills

- Previous experience with fleet maintenance, construction equipment, automotive repair, shop work, or a similar hands-on position is an asset
- Strong basic mechanical knowledge
- Comfortable using hand and power tools




- Able to perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and minor repairs
- Comfortable responding to basic service calls
- Ability to identify when a repair is beyond your skill level and requires escalation
- Comfortable sourcing and purchasing parts and supplies
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Able to work independently and prioritize multiple requests
- Comfortable working outdoors and around active construction equipment
- Physically capable of lifting, bending, climbing, and performing hands-on work
- Strong attention to detail
- Reliable and able to communicate clearly with field crews and management
- Valid driver's licence with a clean driving record required
