Core Function The Cree Language Resource Officer (CLRO) provides administrative and technical support to help advance the mandate and objectives of the Cree Language Commission. Working closely with the Coordinator and the team, the incumbent supports communities in identifying and compiling existing language resources, while contributing to the development of contemporary Cree-language learning materials. The role also involves fostering strong collaborative relationships with local governments and affiliated organizations.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the preservation, promotion, and revitalization of the Cree language.

Functional Responsibilities:

- Collaborate with a cross-functional team on initiatives and projects that support the preservation, promotion, and revitalization of the Cree language.
- Conduct and support research on matters related to Cree language development and revitalization.
- Lead community engagement efforts to identify, collect, and catalogue existing Cree language resources developed by local governments, entities, and organizations.
- Develop strategies and action plans for the creation and distribution of language resources across various platforms.
- Coordinate and oversee the planning, development, and production of modern Cree language learning materials for learners of all ages and across diverse subject areas.
- Identify and explore cutting-edge, user-friendly resource ideas that can be adapted or reproduced in Cree for the benefit of Cree families and communities.
- Coordinate and support the network of Cree language translators throughout Eeyou Istchee
- Assist in the planning, organization, and facilitation of public meetings, consultations,



and engagement activities.
- Oversee the production, printing, and distribution of materials that promote and support the use of the Cree language.

Interaction/Communication Responsibilities:

- Establish and maintain a strong presence within communities to keep the public informed about the activities, initiatives, and developments of the Cree Language Commission, as well as other information requiring public awareness and outreach
- Oversee the production, printing, and distribution of materials that promote and support the use of the Cree language.Build and sustain collaborative working relationships with local communities, Band Councils, and affiliated entities to support and advance Cree Language initiatives and revitalization efforts.
- Establish and maintain a strong presence within communities to keep the public informed about the activities initiatives and developments of the Cree Language Commission, as well as other information requiring public awareness and outreach.
- Contribute regular updates and content to the Cree Language Commission's quarterly newsletter to promote effective two-way communication and information sharing with stakeholders and community members.
- Coordinator and oversee the translation of documents into Cree syllabics as required, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and quality.

Reporting Responsibilities:

- Provide written quarterly progress reports to the Coordinator




- Assist and collaborate with the Coordinator to produce annual reports.
- Organize regular updates to be made for local governments, businesses and entities on the developments and progress of the Commission’s office.

Other Responsibilities:

- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education:

- High School diploma or equivalency.
- Must possess a Cree Literacy Diploma or equivalent certificate.
- Robust knowledge of Cree Language and Cultural Heritage in an asset.

Experience:

- One to Three to years of relevant experience.
- Experience in matters relating to local or regional Cree Language work.
- Experience in project management in a northern context.

Language:

- Superb fluency in Cree and English
- Strong ability to communicate in the Cree Language is a definite asset, with willingness to receive training for Cree Literacy when available.
- French is considered an asset.

Knowledge and Abilities:

- Strong ability to read, write and produce in Cree Syllabics.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to adapt to a changing environment.
- Proven ability to work independently, as well as in a team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

Additional Requirements:

- Willingness to travel.
- Typical office setting where there are no unusual physical demands.

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.
